ive got elinchrom quadra ranger s heads coming and I'd like a lightweight modifier to take on holiday to Croatia.

It doesn't seem convenient to take stands on holiday and wife and I are sharing a suitcase.

I was thinking about a large octobox that could be hand held by a friend, there are eight of us going. Concerned about how much room it will take up when collapsed.

Be interested to know what options would be work? Worst case scenario I might have to use bare heads.

I have a cabin luggage bag which have my lights and camera in

Yes. Smallish silver brolly for max light. And 7mm shaft for Elinchrom.

Actually, maybe a bit larger brolly used a bit closer to the head - make sure you collect as much light as poss. Those standard Quadra spill-kill things, if that's all you have, spread light everywhere.

The bags that elinchrom supply are semi-rigid in that they do not fold flat. The diameter is about 6-7 inches and the length is about 24-30 inches (depending on modifier). There is an awful lot of air in those cases which would take up a lot of space in your luggage. You could however just dismantle it and fold it flat in a suitcase. It would take up much less space but take slightly longer to setup.

Regards...

As a side note - check the airlines view on the Quadra's Li-Ion battery, restrictions on airlines seem to vary at the moment depending on the day of the week.

I've been told different restrictions on the same route/carrier between the outbound & return flight

The rules are clear enough, and as long as the (lithium) battery is disconnected from the unit and is in a plastic bag, and is in the hand luggage, no problem.

All academic to the OP though as he has bought the unit with the non-lithium battery AFAIK

Dan, where are you based? I have a couple of Eli varistar brolly boxes that I use all the time when out and about on my Quadra's, nice soft light and very compact, like a shoot through with a closed back. You are welcome to borrow one, though they aren't that expensive to buy (for Elinchrom anyway!).

What about taking one of the cheapo Elinchrom 66cm Portalite boxes that they supply in lighting kits? They're only made out of four bits, a solid speedring, a front diffuser, a reflective cloth and the steel struts. The quality of light is great and they're fairly robist (if a little fiddly to put up). You can pick them up second hand on eBay for not much and they fold down to absolutely nothing. You'll need the EL Quadra adaptor to mount them on your S heads, but it sounds like you'll probably have this already.

Thanks for the offer, I did buy a silver reflective umbrella.

I've just got back for a work trip to Holland and going to Croatia Saturday - the umbrella will do for now.

Gatwick airport inspected my bag at security, asked if I was carrying a liquid acid battery - told him it was lead gel, and all was ok.
