Anybody have any veiws on the fact that three elephants will be performing at a circus in the U.K for the first time in years.

they tracked nelly down then?!

cant say im bothered, as long as the animals aint mistreated i dont have a problem, however if they are used to carry around performing midgets and bearded ladies then im both appauled and outraged!

Seconded. If they are looked after, then I dont see an issue.

I'm torn on this one.

Whenever money and animals become intertwined, there is always suffering involved.
I think it's a huge step backwards in terms of animal welfare.

BUT I also love the circus!
I attend alot of circus performances and only a few times have I seen animals involved.. one was Paulos circus where they use a duck in the show. Also Giffords circus, where they use horses and even a bird of prey - but the animals seem to really enjoy themselves and seem very well looked after.

But then.. I think with elephants it's a bit degrading, it's not the standard of life they are meant to have, it is so far removed.
A news article says one of them is a rescue from Africa where her mother was culled at a game park :( So maybe she is better off where she is?

The bottom line is - the animals can't speak for themselves, none of us know exactly how they feel, so as greedy humans we do as we please.

I don't like the idea of animals at a circus and I certainly wouldn't go to one - I doubt that the animals are looked after properly and I do believe that there is a lot of abuse involved in getting these creatures to 'perform'

Zoos try to provide the animals with as much of a natural habitat as possible, I don't see how a circus could do that.

I think it depends. There are a few circuses that don't travel, and in that environment I think they could be looked after properly. The other way to look at this, is with it being such a bold move there will be many people with eyes on them, making sure it's all above board, and making sure the animals are well looked after.

Don't like circuses. Still recall the footage of that bloody Chipperfield woman striking an elephant.
Don't like zoos. Animals pacing back and forth in cages. Polar bears in a pit with water green with Algae (Glasgow).

If anyone wants to watch animals let them go and see them in the wild. If it's too much trouble or too much money then do without.
