As a newbie I'm looking to get one of these but can't decide which. I've found CS5 extended for under £200 as I have a daughter at college so money's not a major factor. I know CS5 will do more but will I need this over what Elements9 can do in a more user friendly package (useful for numpties like me!)

I wouldn't necessarily say that Elements is a more user friendly package. The interface is very similar in both. Some functions may come under different menu headings, but there's not a massive difference in how either are used. CS5 just has more options.

I used to have CS4, but didn't use a fraction of it's capability. Now I use either just Canon DPP or Elements and Paint Shop Pro. Still don't use a fraction of their capabilities.

Personally I'd go for CS5, it hasn't got the limitations of elements (still a good package though), and unless you have used one before theres going to be a learning curve for either. Theres probably a lot more tutorials for CS5 than elements and lets be honest CS5 is only limited by your imagination really... well and your wallet.

Your daughter is only at college for a limited time, make the most of it and get CS5 as it will most likely be too expensive without the student discount

CS5 also have more raw options if I remember rightly.

Elements and CS5 both use the same ACR for handling raw files.

I'm pretty sure elements only has 3 tabs in ACR and CS5 has 10 in ACR, the engine is the same, but I think curves, split tone, camera callibration len correction, and a few others are missing, I have only had a quick look at elements though.
Elements also doesn't have selective colour, the pen tool, CMYK, or a lot of the layer styles. It also doesn't have the ability to save actions.
