Elelments 9 advice please.

Having used the Sony software up until now (Picture Motion Browser and Image Data Converter), I have now loaded Elements 9 on to my new PC (Because the old Sony software does n ot seem compatible).
Would anyone please be so kind as to give me an idea where to go next with this, as it bears no relation to any previous software which I have used.
So far, I have uplaoded the images from the camera, and I can browse them, and do simple edits. However, if I try to do more complex edits, then the software only seems to save the reworked file as an "XMP", rather than a TIFF or JPEG.
I have read the instructions, but cannot get my head around them.
Could anyone please gicve me an idea of the logical steps/workflow to take once I have my images ready for editing.

Andy- invest in a book called "Photoshop Elements 9 for Dummies" its a great guide for all the questions you have, Amazon stock it for around £15 I believe

maybe upload the images from camera to hard drive and then open them with PS 9

Ive up-graded now to CS 5 so no longer use the Elements 9 software

cheers mate. I have at the moment an image which I am editing, but cannot seem to find a way of saving it in JPEG or TIFF format. It is simply ending up as an XMP file which I cannot open.:bang:

I think I may have worked it out. It is a two/three stage process, where you make changes to the DNG and then save the changes. Then go to "file - save as" and then choose the format for the saved file.
Got there in the end.
Is there a quicker route though?
 
That's about right you process the raw file then click open in the editor and make any further edits there if needed then do a save as.

I'm a little confused as in you your first post you mention XMP file and in the last post you mention DNG. Now DNG does not use a xmp file as the information is embedded in the file itself, so begs the question which format are you using, native raw or DNG raw.

If you use DNG with the embed full size preview you would be able to just press done in the raw window and then be able browse your DNG raw files with almost any of the free browsers like fastone,infranview etc and see the altered image (embedded preview) which means you would not need to create a extra file just for veiwing as well, unlike raw and XMP, one of the advantages of DNG.
 
I have it for the mac once you edit your photo go to file save and it will give you a menu there is a drop down menu where you can select which format you'd like to save your pic in prob solved let me know if you find it :D
