I want to get one of these electronic christmas frames for Christmas. You know these small screens where you can upload with a usb memory stick and they show all your photos as a slideshow.

Does anyone have one or have any experiences they would like to share? - before I waste my money which doesn't rest well with my Scottish heritage :D

Seriously though, I'm not just saying all this because we're selling them - I'd only recommend them to you if they were any good! These ones had a good resolution, and the colour reproduction was good too. It has no internal memory, but has an SD/MS Slot and accepts USB memory devices too - possibly even USB HDDs! Comes with a remote control too and really is a pretty cracking device. The staff here have bought most of our first delivery!

Would be interested in hearing your thoughts though Gary - we've not really heard much back from previous sales (nothing bad, but nothing good either!) but the staff here have all been really chuffed with theirs.

We can get smaller/cheaper ones too, but I'm a bit loathed to recommend them as the resolution's not as good.
 
Hi Mark, I might be interested but what bothers me from your photos is the memory stick clearly visible to the right of the frame, is this usual for a digital frame?
 
The memory stick poking out is a USB key. I didn't have an SD card to hand (it'll take an SD or MemoryStick discretely in the bottom) so I just popped a USB key in the side to make it work. You can get the tiny PNY memory keys which would be much less obvious, or just get a short USB extension lead to hide a USB device if that's what you're planning on using.
It plays back video too (MPEG1/2/4), has a rechargeable battery, video and audio out to hook it up to a TV, plays MP3's, 2 x 1.5W speakers, and a remote control.
 
I promised a follow up on this product but have been soo busy with the Christmas run up.

Frame is up and running with a USB stick in it at the moment. I don't have any SD cards and don't have a reader for memory stick to transfer photos on to. Will sort that for future.

Unit comes in box and is well packaged. All you need except memory is in the box.

The unit has an inline transformer which is fairly bulky so you will need to place unit somewhere where you can hide this. I placed it initially on a beureau in our kitchen however the cord from the unit is too short for it to reach the ground so pulls on the unit and as it is nearly as heavy as the frame pulls the frame backward.

The menu takes a little getting used to and although there is very little information in the enclosed booklet, what is there is essential so do read it or you will spend a lot longer trying to work it out.

Once mastered it is fairly straightforward to get photos running in a slideshow . Resolution and screen rendering is great! The screen is really bright with good colour rendition and pleasing contrast. The booklet does not advise what size you should make the images for optimal viewing. I have not worked this out yet but small images (800 pixels wide) will not fill the screen and large images do not load instantaneously. Need longer!

The screen is not huge (8cm?) but you can see photos clearly from a decent distance.

Although the unit can support MPEG playback I have yet to try it. To have an MP3 play as your slideshow runs simply choose mp3 first then commence slideshow as normal. Volume can only be adjusted by remote so don't lose it!. Sound quality ain't bad but at high volumes sounds tinny and awful. At low levels it is surprisingly good.

Unit works on a battery which charges when plugged into AC power so you could place on a coffee table etc for having friends round - a new way to bore the neighbours with your holiday snaps?! :D

Worth the money? Yes! If you want a big picture you will need to look elsewhere but I could imagine these units will fill a few stockings this year - and I would be chuffed if I received one!

Cant you just play your photos back on a slideshow on a pc...thats just what this looks like.:thinking:
 
If you want to let people into your scanky, dingy basement office/pc room sure but better to share one's photographic endeavours at the breakfast bar or the loinge ;)

Even better, as it is battery powered take it to a restaurant! :D

I saw a couple of these things on display in PCworld - they were terrible! One was Philips and the other was some unknown brand that was playing tinny music while it showed pictures.

Terrible because they were like really early laptop screens where you have to look at the right angle to see anything..... 20 degrees off square on and it was shadows and red smudges instead of an image. Prices were around the £100 mark.

So if the model you have has a good clear display then I'd say you've bought well. Think I'll wait till they drop to ~£20 each though ;)

Robert - I agree. I wanted one a year ago but did not like quality. In a year's time they will be cheaper for sure or bigger for same money. This one has great clarity and good viewing range, it is a smaller screen than some I have seen but for quality and available functions I hold my opinion and say it is great value.

I know the sort you mean. The screens on these are actually pretty good - I can take some photos of one here at a few different angles if you'd like to see. Like any TFT, if you go too far from looking straight at it then the image does diminish, but it's a lot better than some of the smaller frames I've seen around. The colours and contrast on the screen are actually a lot better in real life than in the photos I took.

Janice, I totally appreciate what you're saying about a slideshow on a PC - however this is a little bit neater to wall-mount or leave on the coffee table instead of a PC!

I think the USB memory stick is just a nice, convenient, and fast way of getting images to display on the screen. An SD card would be the most sensible way to have photos being displayed all the time.

Anyway, like I say, we've got a couple left if anybody wants a last-minute gift for someone! ;)
