So I'm getting a bit annoyed with shelling out a small fortune on Gilette Fusion blades all the time. Is there an electric equivalent with a similar outcome? It's hard enough trying to find a site that reviews each unit with a bit of honesty without being bribed by the manufacturer!
 
I've never found anything that comes even close to a blade. I don't believe they exist. Happy to be proved wrong,

The old Braun did but then they 'improved' it and it's never been the same since :(
 
I'm with Nick I'm afraid. Unless there have giant leaps in technology, electric doesn't come close to a wet shave, why not try a straight razor or old style safety razor, closer than any Mach 26 (or whatever they're up to by now) and the blades are pence each
 
No Blades for me - don't forget though with an electric razor you've potentially the foil to replace and maybe the cutters themselves...and of the ones I've tried previously not as good as a blade...

But yes, agree with you about the cost of the dam things...
 
I have always wet shaved but as and when I can be bothered, tried shavers years ago and they were rubbish, anyway I thought I would give them a go again in a bid to have a more regular shave so I bought a new panasonic shaver, it's an improvement on 30+ years ago but I still have to wet shave once a week to get odd bits it just will not touch.
 
You'll never get a close shave with any electric shaver but you'll get good enough for a work day most of the time, the trick is to run it lightly over the skin, not press it into the skin. I use a Remington 3 head Philishave stylee rechargeable.

I wet shave once or twice a week using dual blade razors from Lidl that are £2.99 for a handle and twenty blade things.
 
I went back to double edged blades a couple of years ago. I too was fed up with the cost of "modern" multiple blades. I bought a Gillette Rocket HD which dates from around 1953 or so and is still pretty much like new, teamed it up with good quality Japanese Feather blades and a decent brush and soap and it's very good indeed. I don't think anything but a "cut throat" razor would beat it. No electric razor would even come close (yes I know, pun intended) ;)

How the hell can they justify it? its down right out outrageous TBH :(
Even buying quattro blades from eBay is not cheap :(
 
I had to give up wet shaving 3 years ago though a shakey hand and excessive blood loss each morning.
I have both remington and braun razors. The remington one certainly works but the rather crude heads tend to nip the skin and burn.
the Braun are far better made and the most recent heads do an excellent job of picking up flat and missed hairs.
The shave is " good enough" but not on a par with the best wet shave.
heads should be replaced every 18 months or so.
 
I've tried shavers in the past, but not that impressed tbh. I'm sure a small rechargeable is fine for convenience, trips/overnights etc, but you can not beat a wet shave!

I still use the Gillette G-2 type blades (think she gets em from Tesco? own brand jobbies)

Can't see the point in paying silly money for 3.4.5.....blades. 1 or 2 is more than adequate surely. Hell the cheap single throw away ones do the job.
 
I wet shave maybe 3 times a year, the rest of the time I use a Remington R5150. It's not quite as good as a wet shave but it passes the " Mrs Gubby delicate skin " test ;)

Strange that because I get more skin irritation from an electric razor than I do by wet shaving
 
I just use Gilette or BIC throwaway razors from Poundland, 99p shop or whoever is doing them cheapest. I find a pack of ten lasts me around six months, plus the cost of gel or foam, and I very often use soap if I haven't skipped a couple of days.

That surprises me really. It's probably down to technique and familiarity with the type of razor I'd guess because used correctly there should be no skin irritation at all. Forget the cost because once you have the razor, top quality double edged blades cost perhaps £10 - £20 per 100 and decent shaving soap can be had for as little a £1 and lasts for months. Throw in a decent brush at perhaps £20 and you've spent no more than a good quality electric razor. Certainly costs are way below the current crop of multi bladed razors.

I do agree that no one wants any skin irritation, and that electric razors are certainly more convenient and to be fair probably faster for an adequate result. They're not for me though.
 
I've been wet shaving since I was a teenager - quite a long time ago - and I've never had any problems with skin irritation. I've tried shavers in the past, but none of them have worked well enough for me to change.

I used a safety razor with double edged blades for donkey's years, but switched to the Mach 3 system a while ago and I'm happy with it. The blades are a bit pricey, but they're not ridiculously expensive for a close, comfortable, shave. Four blades cost about £7 - £8 and last me around two months with daily use, so about £1/week. That's less than a Sunday newspaper and a lot less than a pint!
 
Spare a thought for those of us with curly hair that cannot be shaved by any means without every single stump becoming ingrown! :( I just have a stubble trimmer now and just keep it short.
 
Serious question. Why have folk fallen for the advertisers/manufacturers insistence that we need 3, 4, 5, blades?
Heck, an hour or two after a shave the stubble is there again!

I used the double edged razor for years with the soap and brush,
but I must admit that I find the multi blade razors better.
(and safer :D )

btw never unscrew the head to replace the blade by gripping the long sides, with your bare fingers,
don't ask me how I know it hurts, I just do :D

I haven't fallen for anything. I used a safety razor and double edged blades for more than 30 years, then I tried Mach 3 and found it better. Good, close, shave and less need for the styptic pencil!

Yeah I fully understand the move away from the old cutthroat & strop & even the open double edged blades (I've also sliced the odd digit) for safety/convenience reasons, but I was just questioning why we NEED multiple blades?

Well the theory is sound as to whether or not its as accurate as they would like us to believe, I don't know.
But I'm happy to agree that up to a point some hairs are pushed down by the razor, and caught by the second / third / forth following blade(s) as they spring up again.

About 30 years for me. It started when I was doing a lot of sail cruising and shaving in coldish water on a bouncy boat, often at a silly angle, isn't funny.

Ah yes so that's why many sailors have beards it makes sense now :D
 
Thing is, I don't know about others, but I don't slowly & gently drag the razor ONCE over each area (like on the adverts) so even with a BIc throwaway I don't get hairs `hiding` for long! :LOL:

Also, most of the red/soreness is caused by shaving against the grain, instead of with it.

I did use the Bic throwaways recently as an emergency measure, I was away and left my Quattro behind,
it took forever and really, I wasn't impressed.
I guess a lot depends on the thickness of the hair and how fast it grows.
But I for one, will continue to bitch about the cost of the 4 blade heads, and pay up grudgingly ;)
 
Bearded more or less continuously for 32 years. Any shaving leaves me with razor rash so on the rare occasions where it does come off, it's allowed to regrow soon afterwards. Luckily, Mrs Nod far prefers me bearded to clean shaven - probably because it hides more of my visage! Working on 32 years, ignoring leap years and guessing at about 10 minutes per shave, I reckon I've saved 81 days of my life on top of who knows how many razors and bars of soap/brushes. A quick buzz over the whole face and head every 2/3 weeks keeps it looking vaguely respectable.
 
Double Edge safety razor + Feather Blades. £6 for a pack of 10 blades and less ingrown hairs than when I was using cartridges.
