I've always had a guitar round the house. I'll never be able to play very well but enjoy making a bit of noise.

I haven't had one for about a year since my squire strat copy got pinched. I've resisted the urge to replace it, but can resist no longer.

I quite fancy a les paul copy this time.

E-bay is really confusing. Prices seem too cheap and I reckon there must be a lot of dodgy copies out there.

Can anyone recommend a place to look for one please? Budget about £200.

Thanks.

You can't go wrong with Ephiphone copies. They are made on License to Gibson so are quality checked to a high level. Between £200 ~ £300.

Epiphone and Vintage are good solid choices with a chance they will be quite playable out of the box until you find £45 for a pro set up.

2nd hand wise have a look at the used section on Richtone Music website, I have purchased loads of gear from them always great service and the guitars have always been in good playable order.

Cheers Brash.

David - Just looked at Richtone Music's 2nd. hand guitars. Fell in love half a dozen times in 2 minutes. Nice one (y)

That's where I'll be looking I reckon.

:agree:

I had a Gibson Les Paul Stolen just after I left school ten years ago. I then bought an Epiphone copy with no luck of finding my Gibson I've never looked back. Yes it's nice to say you have a Gibson, but I've never had any problems with the Epiphone and the quality is great for £300. Can't complain at that. There's loads of different versions though that you should be able to get within your budget.

I had an Arbiter Les Paul copy back in the late seventies, and it was really nice to play.

Not me, but mine was just like that. I used to have an old Vox AC30 and the sound was great, loads of sustain.

Thanks again chaps - great pointers there.

I'll ask Jack next time I see him. :)

The nice people at UPS will be delivering an Epiphone Les Paul and a small Marshall amp, bought from Richtone, on Friday. £230 delivered.

My fingers are twitching.

Thanks again.

I've too many guitars but I bought one of these about 3 weeks ago.

Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty

I'm not sure what they retail at but I bought a 2nd hand one from somebody locally for a price that hardly makes it 'precious'.

Plays nicely and is one of the better Les Paul 'style' guitars I've owned.

That looks very nice indeed - to the point where I am envious.
Three very rich humbucker pickups, I can only imagine the tone and sustain.
That is probably better than many of the standard Gibsons.

Apart from the knobs that is blooming lush, I always change the knobs for these as I find them better for rolling off the little finger.

Looking at the knobs on my Epi LP Black Beauty. They're the same as these rather than the gold ones on the picture i posted above.

Like this one.......

What mine doesn't have is the pick plate. The previous owner had removed it and then lost it. Easy enough to replace though apart from the tripple humbucker plate is slightly different.

Cheers David.
I've been looking round for places that sell guitar parts and hardware.

Is there anyone you'd particularly recommend?

Depending on what I need I go http://www.axetec.co.uk/index.htm, Keith is a genuine guitarist for the people by the people type, The hi wire strings and iron gear pick ups he sells punch way above the cost.

So, had it a couple of days now.

Put new strings on, raised the bridge half a turn to get rid of a very slight buzz on the g string. Feels nice.

Getting a nice sound out of the Marshall amp. Clean but with a threat of growl and bite.

Have to go through the sore finger bit again, but I've decided to learn properly this time around.

Found a brilliant website - justinguitar.com

He is a very good teacher and I like the structure.

Have also booked lessons locally - one hour every other week.

I'm feeling very motivated and excited.

Too late for the OP but I would recommend visiting a decent shop to have a fondle of a few options rather than buying blind off the web. Even consecutively numbered "identical" guitars can feel different and a decent shop will set the instrument up for the customer as part of the deal.

slap some 13's on the guitar ya jessie that'll sort you out :jawdrop:

Do you mix and match ?

I used to use 12s on the bottom 3 and 9s on the top but folk talk about uneven tension on the neck

I see Ernie Ball now do STHB (Skinny Top Heavy Bottom)

all brands seem to have custom options now so I doubt there is anything in the uneven tension talk, I have tried D'addy's medium top heavy bottom on strats/teles which gave a decent balance for grungy riffs and widdly solos but in general I will stick to standards
