weekly Elaine's 52 for 2016 - Urban added

Both shots on theme but think I prefer the slightly darker and edgier shot as opposed to the monkey.

Interesting compositions for both; I wonder what they might have looked like the other way around? A close up of the
monkey's paws might have been more enigmatic, whilst a square on to the bars, much wider shot of the hands might have provided a greater sense of being captive and confined.

Hi Elaine, loving both images for Captive. The lighting is so good on #1 but the expression on Monkhe's face does it for me :p Two lovely shots, and a great start (y)

Hi Elaine,

I like the thought of discarding the old year and in with the new. I too like the way the months have been arranged.
Metal - both good shots but No2 wins for me. Great lighting and detail.
Interesting idea for captive 1 but there is something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. I do like Monkey though. He looks almost happy to be captive :)

Captive I would have to agree that the Hands are the better picture but I like the monkey

Captive: Hi Elaine. First one in mono for me. With bars shot straight on, this would be perfect for me

Thanks for the comments. I agree about the angle of the hands through the bars, but the layout of our stairwell means that I'd need the power of levitation to shoot them square on ;)

Week 3 - Miniature

I was determined to get out into the park for this week's theme and even had a shot in mind, but unfortunately the change in the weather beat me to it. So, unless we get a bit of afternoon sun later in the week, this is going to have to do for now. The hardest part was getting enough light to highlight the writing, without lots of unwanted reflection and it's so tiny that even a miniscule change of angle or movement of my finger made a massive difference. But after lots of attempts, I think this is the best of the bunch.

Great photo, the writing comes out very well, and I like the reflection on the edge of the battery.

Thanks Bernd!

Good shot there Elaine, that must have been very hard to get in sharp focus. Is it a macro lens?
Thanks Tim. No, I only have a Lumix bridge camera, so it's the standard Leica lens that comes with it, set for macro shots :)

Well done Elaine - all the details are sharp which is quite astonishing really given the problems we all have with camera shake etc. You must have a very steady hand (well, finger).

Agree with the others, the light and detail on the battery are very well done, I always find it hard to light detail in shiny objects.

Thanks for the comments. The original idea of putting the battery on my fingertip was obviously to give a sense of scale, but I think that it helped with both the lighting and avoiding camera shake. Rather than having it on a flat surface and having to position the light just right, I was able to crook my finger slightly at an angle away from the light source (my computer screen!) and my left thumb was able to rest lightly against the side of the lens to help keep both hands steady.

A very nice macro image Elaine, nice and sharp

miniature : nice sharp image I really like the clear detail of the finger as much as the battery

Yes a nice image and as stated that glint of light on the far edge gives it some depth. Always jealous of these cameras that have good macro's built in.

Thanks Gaz. Most of my photography is done on an opportunistic basis on the hoof and, this challenge apart, I rarely go out with a specific target in mind. So, being able to quickly swap from landscapes, to macros, to wildlife, to people, etc, with the minimum effort is really important to me and I love my little Lumix.

Well done! I really like the sharpness of the image as well as the soft lighting of the PC screen - works really well ! (Did you get your watch back together?!)
Thanks Richard. Haha, it was a spare!

Did I read this right? You were holding the battery in one hand and the camera in the other? Very impressed with how sharp this is if so.

You got the lighting just right on it, you can see the writing so clearly.

Lovely sharp detail on the finger and battery. I agree with Steve that it's impressive you managed to get it so sharp!

Wow that is miniature nice and sharp and a good steady hand.(y)

very clear, sharp and clean finger ... :exit:

Cool shot and neat idea. As already said, well executed - it is clean and sharp. Big pats on back for persevering with lighting and avoiding any reflections.

You nailed that one Elaine. It must have been a nightmare lighting it. Great fingerprint too (y) I didn't appreciate how small the battery was until I looked at my own finger
