Yes
We're going to Athens in September and I have some Amazon vouchers to spend. I'm thinking of treating myself to some film for the holiday. I'll be mostly taking shots of the markets, sights etc. I've used Ektar before over here and not been that impressed but I did shoot it in overcast conditions. I was just throwing this out there to see what you fine people would do!

Cheers as always!

I imagine that the market will be bursting with colours so I would got for Ektar over Portra.

Yep, Ektar for really bright, colourful scenes and Portra for people.

Both can be used for any and all sorts of circumstances provided you know what you're doing at either the scanning or printing stages, although each obviously has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Just choose one or take both; we really won't be able to answer this one for you, as it's far too subjective.

You could try one roll of Superia 200 to see if you like it.

I'd say Portra, its very versatile and designed to be scanned so you can add more oomph if you feel the shot needs it but you'll not have to worry about the scanners dynamic range clipping colours.

Ektar, if you didn't like the look of Ektar in overcast light you're going to hate Portra!

Which isn't remotely what I said at all...

Maybe you were being ironic or I have completely misinterpreted something, but your post suggests that Portra struggles even more in overcast light than Ektar. I'm not trying to be difficult; I'm just looking for clarification.

Portra looks incredible in overcast light - its look is almost defined by the colours it can produce in that context!

Ektar looks like Portra when used in overcast conditions, smooth and flat and a little bit 70s movie. Portra looks like that all the time because it's meant to. IE the OP is therefore not going to like it!

Thanks for all the input guys! I went for the Ektar after a bit of research as well as the opinions on offer here. I've shot loads of Superia before and I have loads of vista 400 in the house. I'll be taking some of the vista with me but fingers crossed we'll have nice blue skies and sunshine so I shouldn't need it!

I do like Portra (specially 400) but have yet to try Ektar, put off by some comments about its lack of latitude (not sure that's the right term, I mean the need to get the exposure bang on, see also Velvia). BUT... I've yet to even SEE a roll of Vista 400, let alone shoot it! :(:(:(
