Just been on the phone and I'm picking up a D1x free gratis and a lens which apparantly cost £1,200 new and is only three months old :) Can't remember the actual lens though, I think it's a 28-70 or something? Will get back on this.

It's good timing as I sold up my lenses and only currently have the 400D with a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 and the 50mm prime. Was planning to get the 55-250mm IS EF-S lens but that's now on hold :D

It's going to be interesting to compare this with my EOS400D especially as the D1x is a lot older and only 6MP. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this as it would be much appreciated!

I can hear it in my head.... [S2]I AM YOUR FATHER![/S2] hehe

The D1x is a great camera, but the lens is the killer deal here. The 28-70 is AWESOME, no other word for it. It's as good easily as the new 24-70.

The camera is for free but the lens is on loan but he has so much I don't think he'll ever borrow it back.

It's my gf's uncle who is pro. He had a D2x and upgraded to the D3 so the D1x's have become surplus. Looking forward to trying it out and I have a sneaky feeling it will blow my canon away despite the lower pixel count - as someone here once said, it may only be 6MP but it'll be the best 6MP you can get! :)

I'll do some comparisons once I get it

I wouldn't be so sure it will blow the canon away, remember it is 6yo technology. But I'd say you might just find you fall in love with the build quality.

Welcome young padawan a life of joy awaits on the dark side.

Lucky sod:)

your GF got any sisters? ;)

Excellent ... ... you've got to go for the Darkside big time now ... :D

:p

lol, she only has a brother, sorry?!! Nice cousins though hehe ;)

Sounds like a nice gift to get! Have fun with it and make sure you post up some first shot snaps with it.

Don't confuse pixel count with quality.

It is the way the processing gubbins deals with the information those pixels provide that makes the quality.....more pixels on same size chip actually DECREASES quality (Canon G7 v Canon G9!)

If you want better quality, you have to go up in chip size - the D2x is better because the processing is changed, but it actually produces more noise than the D1x - to get the best out of it, use it in RAW.

Still won't compete with a scanned film shot though!

lol, no! They are poor students!

Interesting stuff! Thanks :)

I'm pretty sure your 400D will give you better quliaty images than a D1x, but the feel of the quality D1x is something else!

As Icecavern says, if its the Nikon 28-70 f2.8, it will blow you away. :D

A truely great (and heavy) lens - might need to work out at the gym a bit

HI

I had a Nikon D1X when they first came out - over £4000. Fantasitically made but what let it down was the cds sensor. I changed to the Canon 5d with the cmos, much better. Now I am considering the Nikon D2x which I think has the cmos

Not necessarily so. The 5.8mp D1x is capable of producing sublime pics, straight out of the camera. It may be old technology, but it works spectacularly well.

Go to Flikr, and search D1x for some gorgeous smooth, sharp and well saturated images.

I'd hope so, it's only got 4 buttons

The number of buttons on the back, is NOT the measure of a camera, or it's efficiency in any way, indeed, I would have thought that the fewer, the better. Whatever, there is a little drop down cover, which when flicked with your fingernail, opens to reveal all the buttons you will need:lol:

I'm just kidding :p it just looks very simple compared to modern pro bodies.
