Any advice on how to quickly set it up to do some test shots? Not sure I want to spend hours working out the menu system etc, lol, when it is such a fine day out there.

The fastest way is to charge the battery, read manual while its charging so you know what the buttons on the outside of the camera are for as they are the ones you use for actual shooting, switch on, stick it on av or tv pick your ISO and aperture or speed and shoot.
Then tonight set it up via the menus and take it out again tomorrow!

Enjoy :)

Set it onto RAW.

Set it to NOT shoot without card. (or you could take a squillion shots to find there is no card!!)

Colour space.... sRGB

Highlight alert enable (then you will see flashing highlights in the playback and show you where you have overexposed the whites)

File Numbering: Continous (or you could get dublicate image numbers)

That should do you for starters............now put it into AV mode (aperture priority) and have fun.

Thanks for that. Hope the battery won't take too long to charge.
Not sure whether to take it out with the 28-135 or the 70-200 f4 L. I am ashamed to say, I have no idea what distance to set the 70-200 to. Never used a lens like it before.

You dont actually have to look at a distance on the lens to set it to..........you just zoom in with its zoom ring till your subject is how close you want it. Just takes a second thats all. Nothing to worry about.

But as a noobie,, I would suggest using your 28-135 for general shots for starters.

Not a noobie to photography. I am just a noobie to this particular camera. I do not take general shots. I aim to get decent shots from the start, lol.

rtfm and dont run before you can walk trying to get shortcuts.

try to do things right rather than be impatient you will get far more out of it.

Take both lenses aswell, why would you leave one behind

Keh  Surely you just look through the viewfinder and frame your shot as best you can given the FL of the lens - as you would with any other lens.

If you want a really good piece of advice here goes.

dont rush out with the camera, i have 4 batteries for my 40D and i have only ever used 2. when they are brand new i charge them for 24 hours weither the charger says they are ready or not and i have done 1400 image weddings using up just 1 and a half batteries. when we do studio shoots we very rarely move the battery bar from full and they average 500 images.

if you do charge it for 24 hours then when you first use it make sure you use it until it is completely drained.

I refer to the switch on the lens that has a choice of 1.5m and 3m. That is what I meant. As I have not used a lens with such a switch before, I believe it is understandable that I am a little confused!

Set it to the green square and go out and enjoy yourself in automatic. There's plenty of time for you to master the menu and all that stuff. Have a great day.

Thats the focus limiter switch, it helps the lens focus quicker, by setting it to 1.5m you are telling the lens that your subject you want to focus on will be as close as 1.5m. If you set it to 3m the lens will not hunt closer, kinda makes focusing faster as it ignores anything closer than 3m.
