EFS 55-250mm, should i consider?

Hi,

I am considering purchasing the 55-250mm as sort of an introduction to telephotos. I am using a 550D and already have an EFS 18-135mm and 50mm.

Any advice / comments on the 55-250mm? I must admit, the main draw is the range it offer as well as of course the price.

yes, buy it, £ for £ one of the best non-L lenses Canon produce. And a lot better IQ wise than your 18-135.

I have yet to hear of an unhappy 55-250 owner. Go over to POTN and look at the image gallery to get an idea of what it is capable of.

Thanks. Will definitely have a good look. Was offered a used lens @ £125.

Question: What is IQ / POTN? Sorry new to photography and forums.

The Canon 55-250IS is a great lens for the money and is definately worth considering. There is a Mk I & II version - the only differences with the MK II is cosmetic so don't worry about picking up a MK I.

You should also be able to sell it on for a minimal loss in the future, if / when you feel you wan to upgrade.

Cracking bit of kit, I've just bought a 70-200 to replace mine but it works so well with my Raynox adapter that I'm going to keep hold of it just for that....until I can afford a proper macro lens anyway. ;)
Get one, you won't regret it. :thumbs:
 
I am in a similar position having the 600D, 18-55 IS and a nifty fifty.

The 55-250 is next on my list unless a 17-50 f/2.8 takes my fancy first :)

This lens got me my first ever 20/20 in competition, I sold it to upgrade to a 70-200 and the best I have had with that is a 19/20. Maybe I need to buy another.....
Seriously though, it is a cracking lens for starting out and if you buy a decent 2nd user, they go on here from £100, you will not lose much if you upgrade.

IQ = Image Quality.

POTN = Photography On The Net.

Just remember that the lens is only a small part of the equation, as is the camera body. The light, the subject and the skills of the photographer (whilst taking the shot and in post processing) will usually have more influence on the outcome than the equipment used. Put another way, in that thread you'll see good shots and bad, but it's all the same lens. I wouldn't worry about the bad shots - that's probably down to the photographer. So long as there are plenty of good examples then that should show what the lens is capable of in the right hands.

Thanks for everyones response.It seems like an overwhelming "YES"

So based on this, henceforth this will be my shopping list come the end of the month:

1) EFS 10-22mm (Because i like taking landscapes)
2) EFS 55-250mm (Introduction to Telephotography)
3) EF 100mm F2.8? (Introduction to Macro)
4) Battery Grip and Battery
5) Grad ND Filters (Cokin i think, those slot in type, will have to learn how to use)

Im thinking that coupled with the 18-135mm and 50mm that i already have i should have covered all bases from Landscape to Macro to Telephoto.

Oh and btw, is everyone talking about the MK1 or 2 when they are talking about the 55-250?

What does everyone think? Am i missing anything?

Thanks for the knowledge sharing. Will definitely take a look at the link. Just to confirm, all those shots are by using the 55-250mm?

It makes no difference whether you get a MK I or II, they're optically identical, it's just the body that has slight cosmetic differences. ;)

Great lens for the money my daughter always got mine on her camera really need to buy a second one .
