Hi everyone

I just recieved one of these, not had chance to use it yet because my filter has not arrived yet and i don't want to risk damaging it.

I just wanted to to say that i am a bit dissapointed with the Quality testing at Canon. The lens has a scratch/tiny dent on the zomm ring and it has a piece of dust on the inside of the lens bang in the middle of the lens:(

I had read conflicting reports about dust problems with this lens but now I can confirm it. this is out of order for a lens of this price rage.

but its still a fantastic bit of kit, I'm sure.

Not sure if it would be classed as damaged, although it is cosmetic damage.

what is canons return policy for cosmetic damage? anyone?

the mark is only 2mm long but it has scored the surface.

where did you buy it from?..a dent and a scratch suggests it's not had the best of starts in life.

I got it form Hong Kong via Ebay.
Digitalrev, who i used for my camera and were spot on.

I have tried to photograph the scratch but its on the silver rim and is all but impossible to see on any pictures, but is clear to see by eye.

I am more dissapointed about the dust than anything else, is that classed as damage?

The dust doesn't classified as damage I wouldn't think I am afraid. Does it show up in the pictures ?

A bit of dust on the front element is highly unlikely to show up on any of your images.

You have a free gallery to use right here ;)

thanks Grendel

the scratch/score is just below the 55 or above?

I read lots of stuff about dust in this lens before I got mine, lucky mine seems to be a nice dust free copy.

It sounded daft when I first read it and lots of folk said it would not work, but one guy said put a filter on the lens as soon as you open the box and it will stop any more dust getting in. Well it is working for me and I too would recommend doing this.

will do, still waiting for my filter to arrive.
I won't be going anywhere with the lens untill the filter is in place.

apart from being better glass than the kit lens and a fair bit heavier too, can people reccommend situations that this lens will show itself as a really good performer?

I would guess low light and indoors but would love to hear of other examples, maybe a few posted pictures?

I have one, am happy with it but would like to know how to get the best from it - learning how to take good shots in general, aside.

user reviews suggest this lens is as sharp as a L glass. with IS and 2.8 which doesn't happen at this focal length on EF mount. the only negative point is the glass' bad dust report and not L glass construction when it cost more than the 17-40 L.

the plus sides of which made me opt for it, even though it was quite an outlay instead of the 17-40 L or the 28 - 135 IS or wait for the new 18-55 IS.

ordered mine with a hoya filter which went on but that's not where the dust gets in is it?;)

i just want to max out the chances for 'sharpness' first time. I'd like to get good at taking good pictures before I get good at making bad pics better with PP software. Bit 'old skool' in attitudes is me.

i wanted the 17-55 too but wallet said otherwise. so went for the tamron 17-50 instead, just no IS. save money for a 16-35 and 24-70 2.8 and both can be tree on full frame. saving money in the long run. the 17-55 is excellent thou, some stay with crop because of this lens, as even the 24-70 2.8 don't have IS and it covers similar focal length on a FF body

To be honest I wouldnt even worry about it. The dust is nothing to worry about (if it isnt the size of a small stone obviously). The only thing I cant understand is why you would not take it out without a filter. It is just as suceptable to getting dust/crap in the lens sitting in the box. Your choice, but I would of been right out the front door, filter or not.

My filter arrived yesterday, but i was too busy moving a fence in the garden, and too knackered after to do any pics :(

I will try to get out today and do some pics.

the main reason for not going out without the filter was because I was worried about sods law, I did not want to scratch the lens.

Oh it is as sharp as an L and boy does it focus fast, I think it has a mind reading chip it knows what you want to focus on before you lift it to you eye, I find my 70-200 L slow to focus now.:lol:

here are 3 example pics using the lens for macro photography.
I did them hand held at f4.5 - f5 @1/125s with image stabilisation on ofcourse.
I did some simialr shots yesterday with my EFS 60 macro lens, hand held and they were all rubbish.

with tripod the EFS 60 wins easy but hand held is another story altogether.

I will post some lanscape and portraits in a few days

By the way, DigitalRevhave offered to replace the lens free of charge.

It works Ok and its prob going to get scratched anyway so I thought I would ask for a discount instead. Or should i return it and wait for a new one without scratch and hopefully without dust in the lens.

Torque22, just picked this thread up. Nice shots, they look extremely sharp.

I suspect you could live with the scratch but I don't think I could live with the dust, whether it affects the pictures or not. Its there and you know its there.

if it's working fine then just accept and perhaps ask for a discount or voucher. You don't want to get another in return and find that it's a bit off as that would be a right pain in the buttocks
