Effective aperture

I've seen a few things about effective aperture, can anyone explain what it is please? I new to all this and trying to learn as much as I can! I'm interested in portraits and I have a canon 1100d with the 18 ~ 55 lens & will soon be purchasing the 50 mm lens. Just want to learn as much as I can x

BTW, I don't want to confuse things but...
Effective aperture is an American term, in this country we usually call it actual aperture.
I've got a bit corrupted by being involved with an American forum, www.photo.net for a few years and unfortunately forgot my English and learned a foreign language
