EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM announcement

Canon has identified a fault that can occur in some early versions of EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lenses.

The fault occurs in the form of shower-like ghosts, or flares. The flare will not appear under normal shooting conditions, so the lenses can be used without trouble in most circumstances. However, under limited conditions (such as backlit or night scene shots where a strong light source shines from behind the shooting object), a flare may appear. In those instances, users can avoid the effect by slightly changing the camera’s direction or focal length (angle of view) while checking for flares through the viewfinder.

To determine if your lens is affected, please check the control number of the product. Canon will repair affected products free of charge, and apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Affected model and control numbers:
EF24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM

The control number is indicated on the back cover of the lens (see the example shown in the red ellipse on the right). If it contains the letters UT followed by a number under 1,000, the product may be affected.

Should you have any difficulty identifying the control number, please contact Canon’s Customer Service helpdesk in your country.

maybe found it on the site today.

Sorry if this is old news

thats no problem :) I'm pretty sure most if not all 24-105's bought in that range would have been by serious photographers and as such would have discovered the news release. since then all have been modified prior to shipping...

Hey Shiato...long time no chat

How are you keeping? Yes old news but what you guys chat about here is exactly what I have found my 70-200 to do.

Is this not possibly a "normal" thing under these type of lighting conditions?(also ef lens on d-slr) The sensor seems to reflect much more light than film would have and if you see the development of the EF-S series it seems to address the sensor reflections off the rear element

I won't be buying this lens for a while then.
Was considering it but I'll cross it off the wanted list for a while

This is old news and all new lenses are fixed ages ago. I bought mine 3-4 months ago and have no problem. It is a cracking lens, well worth looking at.
