Now then' i,m in the market for a decent wide/carry around lens , I think the
17-40L speaks for its self but how does the EF-S 15-85 compare as its priced quite similar?
Thanks Mark.

I've not used the 17-40L but the 15-85 is an absolute corker of a lens. I've used my friend's copy on my 7D and compared it side by side with my 24-105L and the difference was minimal. BTW my friend has it on his 50D and he's chuffed to bits with it.

For a crop sensor the 15-85 all the way... wider, longer, IS as well... perhaps a bit cheaper. Not weather sealed but neither is your camera body!

IMO you'd be silly to go for the 17-40 over the 15-85.

Take the L off the 17-40 and logic prevails.

It's a brilliant super-wide for full frame, nothing else. 15-85 is superb on a cropper, the only real alternative being the even more wonderful 17-55 2.8 IS.

I think people like the L because it's cheap and because of the L.

Thanks for your replies chaps  , the scales are really tipping towards the 15-85.
Sounds like Canon put the "L " on the wrong lens :D .
Mark.

L wrong lens nope
what camera you putting it on full frame 17-40 awsome

I think you may be able to consider a older model. 20-35 L f2.8

Personaly I find them fantastic and hte best bit...good ones can be cheaper that the ones you mention.

I have used mine on various crop sensor cameras with no issues.

Just a thought

Hi Paul , its going to be used with a 50d , maybe i should have said Canon should have put the "L" on the 15-85 too as they seem to be raved about by everyone who has used/owned one. Mark

It isn't, only the battery door and memory card bit are, and even that's debatable.

Another vote for the 15-85. I use one on my 7D and love it.. 2 more people at work have bought one after they tried mine....

neither I'd get the 17-55 f2.8 IS

Thanks Poah , now that throws another lens into the mix :bonk: ;) , or does it really because its about £200 more than the other two lenses and its not "L" quality glass, I understand its a faster lens and " IS "but is it that much better?
Cheers : Mark.

better yes - faster aperture, better glass, less distortion, less CA, sharper.

As a walk round lens the 15-85 is hard to beat, super IQ

My only comment then is you do go full frame.. you need to buy the 17-40 anyway..

17-55 is a great lens but so is 15-85...

depends if you need f/2.8. if not, 15-85 is both longer and slightly wider as well.

I've said it on a few other threads I know but the 15-85 is a great general lens on a crop sensor body. I'm sure 17-55 is also great but not quite as wide and a lot shorter.
