What's the difference between the EF-S lens and EF lenses, which will fit the EOS 7D that I have just bought?
 
An EF lens will work on a cropped or full frame body.

EF-S is for cropped only.
If you were to try and use an EF-S on a full frame body, there would be damage caused!

Don't see why not.
Good zoom range, has got image stabilizer I believe......

For a general walkaround-everyday lens I'm sure it would be a good buy.
 
To be a wee bit more technical, the EF-S lenses protude further back into the camera body so that the rear element is actually closer to the sensor. Aps-c cameras have a smaller sensor and therefor a smaller mirror to flip up. Full frame cameras have a larger mirror and this will hit the rear element of an EF-S lens but not an EF as this has more clearance.

Sorry, but I don't think it would, not a great lens and was criticised as being poor when bundled as the kit lens with the 40D and 50D
Having just spent over a grand on a camera body I would like something better to put on it

First choice for me would be the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and second to that the new Sigma f/2.8 OS in the same sort of focal length has had good things said about it too

Just my opinion, but I would want to make the most of such a fine camera and its 18mp, think the 17-85 would probably be well down in my list of choices

Consider the Canon 15-85mm instead. It is a better lens than the 17-85mm.
