I use to use this lens the mrk1 version befor i upgraded to the L lens, and it was a great little lens to use nice and light the focus aint the fastest around but a great little lens to start off with and i had it on my 1000d like your gona be. here a few pics i had with this lovely lens last year

What is the Nikon equivalent? Value and IQ?

For the price you pay it's an excellent lens. It's AF is pretty quick, it's sharp enough to cut and the IS is great for slower handheld shots. It gets some great reviews on this and other forums regularly. I got one when I had my 7D and 550D but when I got my 5D2 I gave the wife the 550D and the 2 kit lenses and she uses the 55-250 IS nearly all the time.

This is a great lens for the price.
I borrowed one last year and put it up against my 70-200mm F4 L. My lens won the day but there wasn't as much in it as I would have thought.
