Hi, I have a Canon 50D, had it for about a year. I'm thinking of upgrading or getting a better lens and was thinking of the EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM. My 50D came with the EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS as kit lens.

Questions are, will I notice the difference. Do I keep my EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS ?

I also have EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM and 50mm f1.8 II

Cheers

yes you will notice, i've done a similar thing, gone from a canon 55-250 IS which i think is comparable quality wise to your 18-200, and gone to a sigma 70-200 2.8 EX which is sort of on a par with the Canon 70-200 L's

And my first shots show that the Sigma is razor sharp compared to the 55-250

i'd personally keep the 18-200 as a walkabout lens as it's light and has a good range, or maybe trade is for something like a 17-85 USM so you have both ranges covered.

Hope this helps

Chris

70-200L 4 IS is a fab thing. Yes, you will notice a difference!

Then sell the 18-200 and get a 17-55 2.8 IS - that's a pukka outfit with your 10-22

24 is wide on crop but you've got a 10-22 so that shouldn't matter. The 24-105 is a cracking lens.

What about the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens instead of the 17-55 2.8 IS?

Cheers

Wouldn't be my choice - 17-55 2.8 every time. 24-105L is a full frame lens and is arguably wasted on a crop camera like your 50D, and of course it's not f/2.8.

Plenty of peeps do use it though, and obviously rate it, but for me the overlap is at the wrong end. I really liked the overlap I had with my 10-22 and 17-55 on walkabout (on a 40D) and didn't have a problem with the gap from 55-70 with my 70-200L 4 IS.

Maybe that's a personal thing, but I don't think I'm alone in this and most manufacturers seem to do the same as Canon with their overlaps at the short end and bridgeable gaps towards telephoto.

I don't like changing lenses if it can be avoided and often on walkabout I can get away with taking just one lens. I couldn't do that with 24-105L on a cropper, but 17-55 was perfect.
