Yes
I have been looking at the cheapo extention tubes and understand that you will loose AF and aperture control, which won't be a problem as I just want to try them as a one off.

But....... without control what will the aperture default to on my nifty fifty? f1.8 or f22?

1.8. The lens needs an electronic command to shut down to smaller apertures, and it's these electronic commands that the cheapy extension tubes cannot convey.

To say that you will have an extremely narrow depth of field at 1.8 when shooting macro is a bit of an understatement. Ideally what you need with cheapo extension tubes is a lens that you can stop down manually.

Okey dokey, thanks for that. Will give them a wide berth.

You can get the aperture set, but then focusing becomes rather hard as the image gets very dark. If you set the aperture to what you want, say f/11, then press the DOF preview button, the lens stops down. If you then release the lens and remove, whilst holding the DOF preview the lens will remain stopped down. I've used this trick.

I've never done that for fear of buggering the lens >.<

I did it only the once, for the same reason... Although I've read it's not an issue...

I'd be scared of it going schizo when you plug it back in and it realises the aperture is NOT fully open... don't fancy trying it on my lovely 50mm... *hugs the 50mm*

I'm using the 50mm f/1.8 and this cheapo extension tubes, that do have electronic control's:

I'm liking them:
