hi all
recently bought myself a canon ef 500mm f4.5, but now have chance of
a canon ef 600mm f4.
i am just wondering what the pro's and con's are between the two.
firstly i realise the size and weight factors, its the overall quality of
images produced i am after...
anybody ever had one or the other and changed, all info greatly
appreciated before i buy the 600mm and sell the 500mm
thanks all paul :thumbs::thumbs:

Bloody hell you must be rich!!

No question, if you can afford to, dump the 500mm (or give it to me), and buy the 600mm f4.

Personally, with that kind of money, I'd buy a new car!! What does the 600mm cost now, about £6k??

hi doug
no not buying new, secondhand, i do not like is versions,so i'm not that rich
doug.originally i was after a ef 400mm f2.8, but could not find one at a sensible
price,so bought the 500mm instead, but this 600mm has been offered to me so
i am just trying to find out the quality differences between the two.
if i get up your way i might dump the 500 on your doorstep.cheers paul

I'll pay your fare:woot:

Seriously though, I doubt that you will find any discernable difference in IQ between either of them, at that quality, the extra half stop that the 600L offers will be pretty insignificant.

I personally would have the 600, because I like to photograph birds, and the closer you can get the better.

In a lot of other ways, the 400 might be a better choice, because 600mm can sometimes be too long, especially considering, as you say, your first choice would be the 400 f8. All are lenses of outstanding quality, and I would be over the moon to be able to afford any of them. They are just about the finest lenses money can buy.

ok Joe T,
at one time i used to hump around a 200mm f1.8,300mm f2.8,400mm f2.8,70-200mm f2.8,plus bodies on each,so weight is no problem,it is quality of what they produce i was trying to find out, but many thanks for your comment
cheers paul

cheers doug
my main interest is motorsport, mainly motorbike road racing, and i do rugby
so its not as though i am trudging around the outback with them.
i always kick myself for letting the 200mm f1.8 go, now that was a cracking
lens even wide open
cheers paul

Bloody should be at the price it cost!! Why pay thousands for a 1.8 telephoto, and be scared to use it wide open:thinking:
