Eep. Think I've damaged my lens

Yes
Rushing on the way to work today I took quite a tumble (ouch!)

Unfortunately, I was also carrying my camera gear to take some photos for work (typical - what rubbish luck). Luckily, it was being carried in a well padded Crumpler photobag and I don't think took the full impact of the fall (my knees did that!!)

Anyway, looking at the lens, the cap doesn't seem to be sitting properly and the inner ring bit covering the edge of the glass seems a slightly askew - it looks like it's slightly out of line with the threads.

I shall be popping over to London Camera Exchange to get my fears confirmed but any ideas in the meantime as to whether

a: it sounds like it can be repaired
b: any recommendations for repair places?

And of course, it's my most expensive (and only!) L lens.
I should have stayed in bed today, eh?!

:(

Did you have a filter on the lens at the time. I've had 2 lenses saved by the filter.

:( Sadly, no. Just the lens cap.

I've not had the lens that long hence no filter yet - all my other lenses have filters partly for protection!!

D'oh!!

I may be completely wrong, but it was my understand most L lenses have an intergrated front element that does nothing but protect the more valuable working elements inside... Im sure i read that somewhere..

Anyway, ive had my repairs done by Lehmanns and they were very quick and friendly on both occasions, when my 5D mysterously died i returned it to WHE, who sent it on to Lehmanns and Lehmanns diagnosed, repaired and returned the body to me in under a week. The other time I had to pay, it was for a full checkup and shutter replacement in my 1dmkII (after i dropped it) and it was ~£100, which I thought was very reasonable, again it took about a week.

I am keeping everything crossed that this is the case :) The lens itself seems to be working fine as far as I can tell sat here at work but it definitely looks like something's been knocked slightly out of kilter.

:) Thanks for the useful info!

Hmmm...well, the chap in London Camera Exchange (where I usually buy kit) had a look. According to him, it looks like the front element and glass have shifted slightly  He did say he'd 'seen a lot worse'!! Fingers crossed none of the internal gubbins have been busted...

Anyway, it will be going off for an estimate and repair. I shall be keeping everything crossed that it is 'just' the front element that's popped out and can, as the chap in the shop said, be fixed fairly easily :(

Insurance??

Maybe I am missing something here, but what lens did you damage?

I droped my Sigma 70-200, back when I was shooting Pentax, onto concrete and had to bend the aperture pin back to get it to mount on the camera. It still worked ok.

Insurance??

:( No, not yet!

(Soon to be remedied - horse/bolted/door, etc. I know!)

It's an L lens - 24-105. Chap in the shop said 'they're pretty robust, at least it wasn't extended, the zoom and focusing rings are all fine'...We shall see.

Thanks for all the info - all useful and nice to hear 'happy endings to damaged lenses' stories!! :)

The standard UV wouldn't have helped in this instance. The jarring action of the drop would have caused the FE to move. Worth considering insurance to save yourself if this happens again in future but I would imagine this could be repaired quite easily.

Horrific isn't it though the moment you reailse it's going down and landing hard

I had a similar thing this week but with mine it was the iris mechanism that was jarred beyond use and it's not a nice feeling :(

Though mine was softened by the purchase of 2 S/H lenses and insurance that should cover it's repair or replacement.

Are you definately sure you aren't covered on insurance - I know I have an option on my house insurance for accidental damage away from the house (I don't have it because I have the camera, laptop, mobile etc all seperately insured on special policies - probably not particularly cost effective but I'm confident that they're properly covered).

Yes, yes it is!

Am currently investigating insurance (:bonk:) - we've only just moved so I'm also in the middle of sorting out contents for the flat so not even covered in that respect (rolls eyes at self). The chap in London Camera Exchange said a customer recommended AUA. I think I'll go for separate cover for the camera as I do for my guitars - that way I know I'll have proper cover. The chap in the shop said a lot of places can be a bit iffy on cover for accidental damage  so I'll definitely be reading the small print.

I didn't even think I'd done anything to the camera/lens at first - all I could feel or see was that I'd fallen heavily on my knees (ouch!) and thought I'd taken the brunt of the fall. Obviously not!

So - lesson learned = don't just think about insurance, do something about it!

The irony was not lost on me that this all happened on the same day that an exhibition at work showing two of my photos opened and I was contacted by Canon to say that they're processing the cashback offer on that very lens

Insurance... Try Photoguard. reasonable T&C's and you are covered if the gear is in the car.Not all companies cover this .

Thanks Chappers. Have already been warned to stay away from E&L due to their wriggling out of paying out!!

Fancy meeting you here.....

LOL.

Hopefully you can get it all resolved soon.
