Hi,
Which collage education in the UK, preferably in London, is the best for photography, with an artistic orientation? At the moment I'm thinking about LCC's MA Photography course.

I'd love to hear your opinions and maybe some other suggestions? :)

What are you academic qualifications so far? Diving straight into an MA would not be advisable, even if you were accepted, which is unlikely without studying at undergraduate level first.... unless you're very well read and have a great folio. What;s your photographic background and history?

University of Westminster would be my first choice in that neck of the woods.

Since the prices of tuition in England have hiked so high, I think I'll be studying in Scotland myself. I definitely don't have what it takes to do a BA so I'll be starting with a HND instead. I haven't studied since doing a levels in 1998, but I should be able to put together a pretty good portfolio with my own photos and personal projects, also showcasing darkroom experience. I may also have to fund the course myself since I've lived out of the country over the last 3 years, but would obviously love to get some financial help if I can.

Do you think it's wise to continue pursuing only a HND in Scotland at this point, due to the costs?

Am I right in thinking I'd have to pay the EU citizen fee of £1285 in scotland if I'm an English national?

If you are English, you will have to pay whatever fees the college sets, and loans are available for some, but it's not a loan from Student Loans England as normal. Anyone from Scotland, or the EU doesn't need to pay fees for studying in Scotland.

If you are from England, Wales or N.I it may actually be cheaper to study in England.

I think it might be three... but yes... you're right. I was pointing out that if you live in England, you can't study in Scotland for free... that's just for Scottish and EU residents... excluding the "rest of the UK" (Wales, England and N.I).

Yeah it seems that (for a HND anyway) to study in Scotland, if you're a Scottish national it's free, and if you're an EU citizen it's £1285.

The exact fee may be set by the Uni or college, but again, you are correct.

Is it not free for EU students here because you can't charge differently for EU students as you do for Scottish ones? That's something that really ****es off the unis lol and if we get our independence it will mean English, welsh and Irish students will be able to go free too.

Sorry, that's correct. I even wrote as much myself further up teh thread. EU students, EXCEPT English, Welsh and Northern Irish do not pay fees in Scotland. Sorry _myshkin... I misread your post.

Yeah I understand, it's not easy to follow! Would be a lot simpler if it was always cheaper to study in your native country...

Thanks for all replies!

I don't have any academical photography background really.
All I've got is my head, heart and hand. But of course I study photography myself (everyday), with practice, a lot of books, so on the whole I'm self-educated. You can find pretty many of my photographies at my website: http://www.maxthorsson.com/

I plan to sum up my first portfolio before the summer, which I'm very excited about.

Since I've got one and a half years left on the gymnasium science program I study at. I plan to apply when I'm done.

University of Westminster? Please tell me some more about it.

Just a great reputation, great industry links, strong alumni... basically all the ingredients for a great course that will allow you to develop creatively, make great links, and give yourself a good start if you're dedicated.

Interesting, that sounds very nice. I'm going to have them in mind. Thank you.

Has anyone else any other suggestions or opinions?
