Hi...i have just bought a canon 400D... i had a compact but have obviously updated....can someone please help me...
After taking photo and realising that i would like to bring image up closer ...i cannot seem to keep image that i have selected from original...(sounds very rambling but i hope you know what i mean)?!
I would appreciate any ideas as it is a very new camera to me......
many thanks...
Jackie

I think you're talking about cropping an image Jackie? Are you saving it when you've finished?

And welcome btw.

And what software are you using?

hi...thanks for your replies.....i am using software provided with package.....
when i used my compact...i could key an image and 'bring it up closer and then confirm that i wanted to save that image .....i can't seem to do that with the 400D....i am sure it is my lack of 'know how' that stops me!! please help and give me the benefit of your knowledge....jackie :)

Hi Jackie

Do you have a PC or a Mac...? If you do then you would be best performing this type of action on this. You can use Lightroom or an equivalent package to load the images from your 400d onto the PC, then you can crop them all you like as well as making other adjustments such as exposure, brightness et al.

Not sure you can do what you want directly on the camera - but then again I am fairly new to DSLR's and so I could probably be wrong. One of the Canon experts will advise shortly.

hi
I have a PC.....so you think i will have to do it through the PC?....i didn't think of that!...i will give that a go......thanks...jackie

Hi Jackie

There are several free image processing editors on the web - if you have a PC I'd suggest either IrfanView or theGimp. Both are excellent and will allow you to resize, crop, trim etc all manner of effects to your images.

Shout if you need more help.

hi...surely i should be able to do that 'on the camera' rather than afterwards when photos have been downloaded....

No it is not normally a camera thing. Editing the pictures on a computer is the normal way.

Picasa is free from Google and is one of the simpler programs to use if you are not confident with computers.

hi...what i really want to do is.....after taking photo and seeing it...i can bring part of the image in closer and i may like that image more than the original...but i can't seem to retain that image on the camera...any ideas?........(i used to be quite intelligent in another life...you wouldn't believe that would you)!!?

Do you mean when you preview it on the camera you can Zoom in using the two buttons on the top right of the camera back? You can't edit it to stay like that on the camera I'm afraid, it's something you would have to do once you have uploaded it o your PC.

I know what you mean jboldbird, I had that facility on my Fujii compact, it allowed you to zoom in and crop then save *in camera*.
I have no knowledge of the D400 but from the others comments I'm guessing it's not possible with it.
I would take Roberts suggestion and download Picasa if you are new to pc processing, thats what I did at first. It's fairly easy to learn and you can get good results with it.
Gimp is also excellent but has a bigger learning curve.

thanks Jo....
Yes Susane...my compact was a Fujii and it was a good facility..i will obviously have to get my head round Pisca....i shall be doing a PaintShop course in September so probably they will cover it too?...thanks for your help...

If you're doing a PSP course that'll be great, Picasa will do you fine until then, it's quite easy... even I can use it.

Hi Jackie - you can trim in camera with the 400D but I haven't tried it because I tend to use Paint Shop to crop mine. ;)

edit. ooops didn't read it properly, you can only trim before printing off the picture from the camera.

doing it on a pc gives you more control over what your doing anyway
