What do you want from your editing software, many would suggest that the industry standard is Adobe CS6 but that's not a coverall it maybe that you need something else there is no one BEST fits all answer

So what do you need/what do you want your software to do?

Also what is your budget?

For basic editing, you already have the best. For pixel level editing, and professional retouching and manipulation then Photoshop is the best there is.

It depends what you want to do. If all you want to do is adjust the levels, tones, maybe remove spots and imperfections... darken skies, adjust colour etc.. then Lightroom can do all that, and what's more, it does it with teh RAW file if you want it to, so everything is reversible.

You want complex image retouching, manipulation, ability to composite images, or do complex airbrushing etc, then there's nothing to rival photoshop.

there're so many great editing software... "best" is hard to define, but mostly depends on one's different need and requirements. Adobe's products are preferred by most of us, but when mentioning portrait editing, maybe other specific software will be more welcomed, like Portrait Professional, ArcSoft Portrait+, Perfect365, Perfect Portrait.... so many to list... I could just say that for me, PS is good but experiensive, so not best; PhotoStudio 6 is good for a beginer and cheap, so the best... just personal opinion. :D

Photoshop is considered the industry standard.... that doesn't mean it's the best for you, as others have said it depends a lot on what your actually doing or need to do with your images.
