Hey,

I have always had a love/hobbie for photography - I am looking into editing ect and was wondering if anyone can offer any advice on what software to use.

would like to be able to edit colours - black and white etc and also be able to produce black and white pics drawing out an item with colour.

There is aso something I have seen where you have a photo and it looks curved - what is this? is this editing or how you take a pic?

You could try GIMP or Paint.net for editing, if you want some free software. Other than that people generally go for Photoshop Elements (fairly cheap) or Photoshop CS (fairly expensive). All of these programs will do what you are asking to do.

With regard to curved photos, I think you might be talking about fisheye lenses. Is this the sort of thing you mean?

You can get similar effects with editing software, but that's not really a proper substitute for a dedicated lens.

First of all welcome to the forum.

This subject is covered loads in the post processing sub forum, have a read of that. The post above misses out Adobe Lightroom, which is a post processing and image management tool aimed at photographers.
 
But Lightroom doesn't do selective colour effectively, which is what I assume this means:

"black and white etc and also be able to produce black and white pics drawing out an item with colour."

Hence I didn't mention it. :)
 
Personally I use photoscape for probably 90% of my editing, it's a great piece of free software, and then I use Photoshop CS5 for the 10% of the complex stuff like selective colouring etc

Photoshop does it all and its not hard to learn either. Very exspensive though.
 
Photoshop is expensive but I say it worth the money, but if you budget can strech that far go for elements .
Try there website and try the free trial see what you think first.
Plus there is lots of good tutorials on YouTube on how to use them.

You can do it in lightroom but photoshop would be my choice as well for selective colour, much more control.
 
I know it can be done. It's just easier to do in Photoshop, which is why I said "effectively". I get the impression that the OP isn't coming back though, so it's all academic. :D
 
If you want to get Photoshop, but aren't sure, and would like to "work up to it", for a progression, I'd recommend going:

1. Paint.NET
2. The GIMP
3. ???
4. Photoshop

The tools in that progression become increasingly more powerful, but also more complex. But they are also free. When you find limitations, then it's likely time to move on up.

3 is blank because I'm sure that someone can recommend a better intermediate step there. e.g. I'm not sure if PS Elements has an upgrade.

100% what I do as well. :thumbs:

I love photoscape. Wouldn't dream of using anything else. So simple to use.
