Editing software... What to use?!

Hey everyone, I know there is a shedload of free editing software (picasa etc) but I have no idea which is any good and which of them to avoid. What do people here use? I dont have the money to pay for photoshop and I dont really want to mess about downloadin it.

Help!

iphoto on the mac is quite decent for a pre-installed piece of software if you use one that is.

I use Lightroom and Gimp. Gimp seems to work with it well. Lots of the tools on gimp are the same as photoshop. As its free you can download it and give it a go.

I use gimp, I quite like it but I have never used Photoshop to compare it. I am also not a very advanced user it has to be said.

Thank you for all your replys guys, will have a go with a few of those suggested, see if I can get my head around 'em!!

I'm a little worried about puttin 'gimp' into google but we shall see what happens!

If you have no money - use gimp. It is the best of the free suites and has loads of tools. It just takes some getting used to (I never got used to it so bought photoshop elements in the end!)

I set out to try Gimp but had a problem with the download and ended up buying PE7 which I like.

Picasa if you want quick results easily.
Gimp if you want better results, more control and are prepared to learn how to use it.
