Edit My Images
Yes
For a few years I had used Elements 9 to work with images from my Canon 50D. On upgrading the latter to a 7DMk2 I ran into issues with the lack of support in Elements for CR files created by the 7D. I opted to install the trial version of Elements 2018 on my Acer I5 with 2.53Mhz, 4GB Ram and 450 GB drive. While it could open the CR files Elements crashed so frequently as to render it unusable.
With Elements 9 I had invested enough time learning the application and was becoming quite comfortable with it. Now I am unsure where to go. On the face of it my laptop should have enough power but it is 5 years old. Maybe I have underestimated the processing required for modern image processing. Any advice out there?

Hi & welcome to TP

Does your laptop meet the specs here https://www.adobe.com/uk/products/photoshop-elements/tech-specs.html

It does look like it meets some of the minimum specification but what about the finer details listed???

There can be many reasons why a program crashes, so do you get any error dialogues shown to indicate the reason for the crash (a screen shot or typed details perhaps?)

TP is a great resource and I am sure other members will be along in due course..........................but do please post with as much info as you can as no one can advise on based what you say above, only ask questions to try to help you understand what may be happening and then suggest a solution???

The laptop seems to meet all the specs set out but only matched the RAM requirement. To correct the previous it is actually 7 years old now, so older machine with new software is never likely to be a good combination.
I hadnt used Elements 2018 until last night for 7 weeks. but the crash was similar to those I experienced earlier. Open CR file. begin to adjust some levels and bang instant crash. Program shut down instantaneously with no warning or error message. Searching the event log I did find this
Faulting application name: PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe, version: 16.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x59aad650
Faulting module name: PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe, version: 16.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x59aad650
Exception code: 0xc0000005

You might try the DNG converter, which should generate files compatible with the older version: https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html

Or use Canon's own DPP package to save your images as tiffs that Elements can read.
