what do you use and why??

i currently use gimp and was comfortable with it but now im not so sure!!

Preferably free sites as i dont do that much editing my pics but would like to be able to if necesary.

Photoshop CS4. I started with PS7 when I got my first digital camera, and it's what I have become comfortable using. I've upgraded as I have changed cameras to retain the use of ACR.
 
CS4 for me with Vivenza and noise ninja, and adobe bridge for raw stuff and image browsing. suits me sir !! ;)
 
are they all free??

i will have aplay at the weekend/download one.... when my coursework is done!!! lol!!

i need to ban myself from any photography until the weekend as i am so behind :lol:

Does no-one read any more, or is it just trying to be smart-*ss and telling us all that you have the DB'sod editing suites?!

i can never justify that much on editing - ever!!!!!!

ive seen the wonders people do with gimp and other free sites so i know you don tneed to pay that much - do you?:eek:
 
Got CS3 from ebay for a hundred notes.......genuine full retail version BNIB. Had to download DNG converter from Adobe (free) though, as it can't convert my Raw files.

Started off with PS5 LE, and upgraded by buying 2nd hand genuine copies PS6, 7 CS, etc. since from ebay.

Why Photoshop? Because i was told that PS is the industry standard and therfore wanted to learn to use it.

You can download LR3 Beta for free at the mo, but it will probably last you a month, then you will need to pay. Need to learn this before I part with any dosh.

Got some unused PS Elements2. If you want to give this a go, I'll send you one on.
 
did your camera not come with any editing software? the software supplied with canons is quite good for basic stuff like white balance / curves / sharpening / crops

I could never justify not spending that much - PS is the industry standard and if you take your images seriously then you should take as much care on choosing the post-production software as you did on the camera and lenses.

There's a lot that you can do with free software, but when it comes to advanced editing, then you have to put your hand in your pocket.

Otherwise Adobe would have been out of business years ago.
 
For almost all my PP, I use PhotoShop Elements - mainly 1 & 2 (not used the 7 I bought a few months back much yet) which came bundled with cameras or scanners. Elements does almost all I want it to, with the full CS only being fired up for B&W conversions (via channel mixer).

There was somewhere you could download a free version of PaintShopPro X - possibly the Corel site. Might be worth a search?

Actually the first line of her post reads "What do use and why?"

The "preferably free" comes later, and the fact the the free bit is only preferable, it does not rule out the likes of CS4 etc.
 
no for the pics i do i dont see the need to spend almost £200 on editing...!!

its a hobby.... hopefully sometimes a paid one...but i dont need to spend £200 on editing when i can get free ones that are acceptable to me :)

Photoshop Elements 6 on a Mac, all I ever need for my photo's.

Ignore the latest version for your platform and search out the previous version, usually can be had for around the £40 mark and will be more than capable of what you need.

But she did also ask what we use and why....or did you miss that bit? :p

I was, as I'm sure others were, just explaining what we use.
 
Serif Photo Plus X2 - I've been using Photo Plus products for years and this one only cost me £12.00 - including an A5 manual and 2 CDs.

I also use PhotoScape - FREE.

And XatCom Image Optimiser - FREE - not an editor but it reduces Jpeg sizes without degrading quality too much.

I've also bought the Pro version of Neat Image.
 
I've checked through maybe half a dozen alternatives to GIMP over the years and I keep coming back to it. I don't see any reason to move to something else unless I discover something it can't do that I need to.
 
Picasa for simple tweaks
Paint.net or Gimp for a bit more control and intro to levels etc
Then start paying :)
 
Morgan Computers (online computer hardware/software retailer) has Photoshop Elements 7 currently on offer at around £20 plus a couple of pounds postage.

Might be worth a look.

EDIT - I've even done the legwork. :)

I'm in the same position :(

Sadly Adobe software costs a bit, but I managed to install my sisters copy :)
Try the free trial of photoshop! Can be found on the adobe site. I believe gimp is one of the best tools that is free.

Why do people not want to spend money on software?

It takes years of research, coding and expertise to produce and support.

You get what you pay for in my opinion (as an ex-programmer)

I got a cheaper camera at the time, because i budgeted for software. Simple !!

Its not showing off, its personal choice :thumbs:

And the OP said "Preferably free" not definately free


edited to say: the freeware utility i do use is irfanview - and yes i donated a few quid to them :)
 
you scrimp and save and spend weeks looking for the right model, not too expensive, and finding the ways to justify spending so much on your first DSLR camera with a kit lens and then spend hours on the internet finding the best price so you can stretch every penny . . . and then discover that the software that you "must have" costs almost twice as much as the camera and lens.
Its odd that not everybody thinks that CS4 is value for money or necessary.

Maybe people don't want to spend a lot of money on software because photography is their hobby and they simply can't afford to having already invested heavily in hardware?

Some of the comments and attitudes on here really amaze me at times. I know Suze said "preferably free" not DEFINITELY free.
 
the point i was making was for £165. you "can" effectively get £350 + Software, if you have a kid at school, for example, reading between the lines.

i'll shut up from now on, then :)

What is it Gimp is not doing for you? I use it and seems to do all I need.
 
I'm sorry Daren but it's still £165!!

For a lot of people, particularly in the current economic climate, that's a hell of a lot of money.

It really all comes down to what they need to do with the image to make it what they want it to be.

A lot of the relatively inexpensive (or free) offerings are probably fine for the majority of people and it's only when they start to get real serious with image manipulation that the big ticket stuff comes into consideration.

no thank you, some of us have morals.

a software value of twice the price of entry level hardware is not a justifiable purchase for occasional touch-ups and minor editting

pro togs use fancy camera bodies with megabuck lenses that cost more than my beer bill for the last few years. Just because I want to take photographs occasionally and for fun do I also need to spend that much on the hardware? it may be a surprise to some people but no, I cannot justify that expense. Likewise I cannot justify the cost of adobe's photoshop which I would put in the category of being a professional tool or a luxury item.

Well I turn my RAW files into TIFF files before putting them through Neat Image.

The Gimp doesn't do 16 bit TIFF files, only 8 bit.

BTW you can make the Gimp look more like Photoshop with Gimpshop.

You need to install the Gimp first then Gimpshop.
 
I have to say I agree about the cost of Photoshop.

And I've also tried trial versions of Photoshop and have to say although it has a lot of functionality I found a lot of its inbuilt features like NR to be vastly inferior to dedicated products like Neat Image.

Apart from that why pay out a lot of money when my own £12.00 package does almost everything I need?

And I do pay out for software - Neat Image, Fast Picture Viewer, Dynamic Photo HDR, Helicon Filter - to name but a few.
 
Currently using PSE 6 after using version 2 for years

My daughter is a student and thinking about getting CS4.
Am I right in thinking that the 160 quid version runs out after three years, but the 190 quid one is longer lasting?

Back to the original question PSE 6 is now available for around the 20 quid mark, got to be worth a go for that sort of money
 
I used GIMP up until recently. It did everything I needed, then I tried PSE, and discovered that it does everything I need (with the addition of a layer mask plug-in) so, so much better.

Elements 7 can be had for £20 now.

exactly.. its my hobby. my 'job is business management degree student. and also work in catering.

see when i said preferably free i assumed people would realise i didnt have that much££ to spend on these programmes :lol:

sharpening pictures...

mabey im doing it wrong... however i dont seem to get the pics exactly how i want.
