Editing or retouching semantics

In a discussion at the minute as to what is the difference between editing and retouching (if indeed there is any difference)

Would welcome any inputs :)
 
They more or less mean the same to me. I don't really differentiate between the two terms when referring to work in PS. Although when it comes to detailed skin work I would normally use "retouch" rather than "edit".

...Come to think of it, I would never refer to anything done in LR as "retouching"!

Now that I'm thinking about it, it's quite an interesting question you have raised. :D

Surely editing is just that? You go through your images and choose your best ones, that's the editing bit.

After that comes retouching or post processing.

Choosing the images is "sorting", not "editing" IMHO. As soon as you make an adjustment you are editing/pp/retouching, etc. :)
 
Here's the direction the discussion is currently going:

Editing is a task that includes correcting exposure, centering, cropping, sizing, rotating and positioning of the subject within the photograph.

Retouching is an image enhancing task where the following types of activity take place: White balance and colour correction, removal of skin blemishes (spots, scars, etc.), removing marks from clothing (Bride’s dress), removing distractions (lamp-posts and any other items that detract from the overall image), applying effects such as vignettes.

Any comments/agreement/disagreement?

You probably see why I said semantics in the thread title!
