I was at Cosford at the weekend and took some photos I was pleased with, albeit some of my settings were a bit screwy. After some good feedback on the photo thread about lightening them too far in processing I'd appreciate any tips on getting the effect I'm after. I've put two shots below showing the clean import to Lightroom (RAW files initially) as well as my best efforts, I generally use Lightroom for processing though I have Photoshop as well though I'm still learning with it.

For the Red Arrows I was trying to get bright red planes against the sky, the only way I got close to this effect was through massive contrast boost, followed by pulling back the shadows and highlights, then increasing the clarity and vibrance.

For the wing walkers I thought the initial exposure had the plane all dark and shadowy, nothing like the bright orange they are in the flesh. I tried to lighten this through exposure, shadows, whites and clarity adjustments, though I'd still want them brighter. When I tried to push things further though the skies started burning out

If you've got any tips on a better way to process these I'd love to hear them.

You're results are very good but maybe a tiny bit overexposed and over-saturated for my taste. Maintaining 'correct' exposure on the subjects as well as some cloud detail was always going to be tricky.

Sticking with LR, don't forget there are some other tools you can use to manipulate tones in addition to those on the 'Basic' tab
  • Temperature & tint
  • Adjustment brush
  • Tone curve
  • Targeted HSL adjustments
And that's without going anywhere near the split toning or camera calibration panels.

The targeted HSL adjustments may be particularly useful in this case - click on the target tool then drag on the relevant area of the image. See http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-compl...rolling-selective-color-changes-in-lightroom/
