Editing a .MOV plus transcoding to MP4 ?

Hi all

I have taken a couple of movies on the OM-1 and want to trim/edit them a little but none too sure whether Windows 10 has a inbuilt tool to do it?

NB my copy of Vegas Movie Maker does not recognise the .MOV files.

It has been ages since I worked on a video on my PC, so well out if date on what can be done with the .MOV files

Ideally(?) I would like to transcode them to a more web friendly MP4 file type.

Thanks, I will have a more detailed look on the PC though a quick look they appear to have very similar feature sets.

You say you have both, which would you say is your / a / the preferred choice ???

I would highly recommend a program called ffmpeg if you are comfortable with the command line or cmd prompt.

Its one command and ffmpeg is a very robust open source program and completely free!

Thanks both.....but the transcoding is only a part of what I would need. The initial editing is a key element.

so other good open source free is Shotwell, Kdenlive and DaVinci resolve

davinci resolve is pro but they give free individual licenses

Thanks for the pointers.

DaVinci seems to need a higher end CPU, mine is 1st Gen i5 Quad Core 760.....so not clear whether it would cope with DaVinci or not.

I looked up Shotwell and could not see any mention of video editing etc by that name?

KDEnlive, need to drill down the info as a lot to digest!

He means Shotcut, not a bad free one.

A good point and I see what you mean.......I will check that Vegas Movie Maker can open & edit an MP4 to check the potential workflow

PS I have looked at some more details about KDEnlive and it has a Standalone version. I do like it when a program is designed that way.......very lean and minimal impact on a PC.

I have just done a quick check and Vegas Move Studio (version 11) does indeed play and allow for editing of MP4 files.

So thanks again for the insight and heads up for the approach of Transcode first and then edit

Now to look at/into Handbrake and ffmpeg and then try as appropriate.

PS the last time I did any video editing was to my Hi8 tape movies imported via Firewire and using, intially, Adobe Premiere which frankly was a cludge I felt more like an early Beta tester. So switched to Ulead Media Studio Plus(I think it was called) and that by comparison IIRC was a joy to use.

EDIT ~ re: Handbrake ~ they say it is best to confirm the 'Checksum' but I have yet to suss out how to do so on Windows....they seem to only give guidance on Mac & Linux to do so
