Im looking to get an all purpose lens for my daughter. She'll be using it on a Canon 760D, primarily for landscape.

The 18-400 looks nice and images on Flickr that are tagged with the 16-300 look good as well so what say you Talk Photography??

There is a small caveat, ideally, she needs to have it for 22nd July so the 18-400 might be out of the picture (excuse the pun) anyway. I've seen different UK shipping dates.

Does she need such a huge zoom range for landscape? I realise that people shoot landscapes at all kinds of focal lengths but I cannot say I've ever felt short changed with a 200mm lens and that is on full frame. As a do it all lens, I would have thought an 18-140 or 18-200mm lens might work okay and be a lot cheaper and lighter.

I have a crop sensor camera, with an 18-250mm general purpose zoom, and a 16-50mm f2.8, a better quality lens in every respect, but for me a bit short for a general purpose opportunistic walk around lens. On the other hand I often find the 18mm of the 18-250mm not quite wide enough. I'd much prefer a 16-300mm to an 18-400mm lens. In fact ideally I think I'd like a 14-200mm for general purpose opportunistic walking around.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think I'll go with the 16-300. The reviews look good and it will let her try different things.

Such a huge zoom range seems a weird choice to me - a lens like that will do all things badly. Something more portable and hopefully with a larger aperture might be better.

I use the 16-300 as my only lens on a D5300 for last 18months as I didn't want to keep changing lenses whilst getting used to SLR having given one up 40 years ago and only had point and shoot since. I like the zoom range and quality seems good (that Is when I get the settings right - I am trying not to use auto).

She has a couple of lenses at the moment and mainly uses a 17-70 Sigma that is a/ old and b/ really really clunky when trying to manual focus. She can also borrow my lenses when she needs to so she has plenty of options.

And, after all that, I bought her a Canon 18-135mm and a Canon 10-18mm
