Edinburgh Tour

We're off to Edinburgh in the next couple of days and Cath has booked us on one of those Sandeman tours, anyone done one of those? The reviews are pretty good so I am looking forward to it. One thing I'm not sure of, I know they say they are free but I'm assuming that the guides wages are made up from the tips, what do people see as a reasonable tip for a two hour tour? Don't want to make a complete fool of myself by offering too little and don't want to be beating myself up, over paying too much. Guidance on this matter would be much appreciated.

How long are you in Edinburgh for?

Never been on one of those tours, they say tip what you feel the tour was worth to you

Personally I would start off at what the minimum wage per hour would be and then round it up, so £7 an hour x 2 = £14 - So use £14 as a starting point and then add on to that the worth of the tour to you

Sorry I can't be of much more help, maybe some others will have some thoughts?

Sort of what Keith's just said but with the addition of the factoring in of the number of people on the tour with you. Say there are 10 people, if each gives the guide a tenner as a tip, that's £50/hr for him/her - not a bad earner! Factor in that some cheapskates will not pay anything though...

If it's a small group and the guide is good, I'd give £20. If it's a huge group, and everyone is tipping (or the guide is a bit rubbish) maybe just a tenner.

Play it by ear, but make sure you've got the right cash. Nothing more embarrassing than having to ask for change from a tip. [/English]
