Anyone here have an ebook reader, if so what which one and what do you think of it? Am really interested in getting one but am not sure i will like it and at £200 its a costly mistake to make. Anyone know of a place where you can try one?

I saw some in John Lewis. My in-laws have one and they like it - I had a little play but am not convinced.

i know what you mean, im not 100% convinced but i read a lot, i currently have no shelf room so will need to get rid of loads of books again and at £8+ for a paper book and £4 or so for a ebook its very tempting. Wish i could rent one and try it tbh.

My in-laws travel quite a bit and my FIL is an avid and quick reader. Rather than take 6 or 8 books for a holiday he can take 1 item. Normally he leaves paperbacks behind and the hotels put them on bookshelves for other visitors to read.

I wouldn't want to use one over paper unless there was a similar reason.

i am the same i always take a few books when i travel, i really dont know what to do.

I've not got a dedicated ebook reader, but I do have software on my Palm Treo. It's great for carrying large numbers of books, although the pages are a little short on such a small screen. The Gadgetshow discussed the Sony reader a couple of weeks ago. There's some info here with some clips from the show. HTH.

Thanks John it agrees that the bebook one is very good (now you can get the new titles) and expresses that they are easy to read, which helps :)

I always have a few books on the go and regularly have to clear them out. I wasn't really convinced about e-book readers, but was recently given the Sony reader as a gift. I have to say I do like it and it goes everywhere with me now. They will never replace books totally but there is a place for the e-book readers.

I have read 6 books on it and the battery level has hardly moved. It doesn't use any power when you are reading, but uses power to turn the page.

Chris :)

I have a PDA with Mobipocket installed. I think it's great and so does Fictionwise! I can keep a whole library of books on it and do.

I agree the screen is a bit small but I can live with it for the convenience of being able to slip it into my handbag. I travel and stay away from home a lot with my job. Carrying this saves space in the suitcase.

I had looked at a dedicated e-reader but decided they were a bit pricey.

More and more authors are converting their novels now as well so most peoples tastes are covered. Originally it was difficult to find any thing but SF.

Have you considered the cost of the books? I've heard that titles on ebooks are invariably more expensive than their paper equivalents.

Pretty much the same as Richmond, I use my pda (palm t5) and mobipocket. The t5 has a large screen so is ideal for book reading though it's not as big as a dedicated readers screen i would imagine. A t5 or tx will set you back £150-200 and you can do a lot more with it than just read books.

I have looked at WHS and waterstones and the price seems to be less for many of the titles i looked at. so that's not an issue.

Have a look at this

I was looking at it from a picture viewing point of interest but remembered it has an e book function. £50

Its very small though the advantage of the readers is they have a bigger screen. The readers will also play MP3s and show photos so same sort of thing but bigger.

I have no use for the other functions on a PDA my mobile will do most of it, but the screen is way too small to try reading a book on. Am planing to try the soft where on Martyn's PDA so i will see what happens.
