I thought I'd warn TP members about selling on eBay, I recently sold a Canon 24 - 105L f4.0 IS lens, which was advertised as mint condition, as it was in mint condition. I got a message from the buyer 13 days after receiving the lens, saying it was wrongly described, as it showed err 01 and they wanted a full refund. I explained that if they had informed me within a couple of days of receiving the lens I would have had no hesitation to refund them, but not after 13 days. it went into an eBay dispute, and I never got any help whatsoever from their customer service dept. I did sort the dispute out by offering to pay for the lens to be repaired, but only did this out of decency. I took pics with the lens minutes before it was sent with no problems at all. My Paypal account was put on hold immediately the dispute was opened, stopping me buying anything else I wanted by that method. Paypal also state in their terms that a dispute will be closed automatically after 20 days if it's not escalated by either the buyer or the seller, but in this case it was not. We all seem to think that the problems with eBay are only there when buying, but they obviously are not.
 
There are far more problems for sellers. There used to be a website called paypalsucks.com and there were horror stories on there.

I sold a brand new phone, the day after I posted it Special Delivery, Paypal charged the money back from my account saying the "senders" credit card company had been instructed to stop the payment.

To compound matters Royal Mail delivered to the address and someone who lived in what was a communal property there signed it literally Micky Mouse.

Eventually after threatening Paypal with Small Claims court I got this money back, as i was able to prove delivery to the address they had confirmed to me themselves.

Apparently monies can be charged back at anytime there is no time limits on it, because people can just claim money was taken from them fraudulently, and didnt notice for months.
 
Sellers don't seem to get any protection at all. I think I'm right in saying a seller can't give a buyer negative feedback either!

Thats correct.

I have a friend who buys things of ebay that are marked non recorded and recives them and then files for a refund saying item not recived....... I dont condone this but he tells everyone! As a rule always send recorded delivery or quim on collection.

Thats correct. You cannot leave neg that shows in the feedback. BUT, you can write in BIG letters on the feedback that they are thieving little gits!
Had a chargeback myself some time ago, and even though I proved that the item had been delivered to the right address and even signed for by the addresee, they still took the payment from me and the item was never returned. Fortunately, it wasnt a very high value item, £50 ish I think. I even traced the address to a surveyers co in NZ. sent several emails and letters, but no joy.

It's people like your friend who have slowly destroyed eBay over the years for the rest of us :shake:

I don't understand why eBay / PayPal don't look at an accounts dispute history, that would nip it in the bud quickly. An account that has made a large number of claims within a few months for the same reason, it would be reasonable to assume something isnt right as opposed to an account who has made a single claim over hundreds of transactions.
 
Ebay and Paypal have been like this for years. This is why i stopped selling my stuff on Ebay.

Example 1 Shark motorcycle helmet new £275 one month old sold for £75, buyer disputed lost the lot.
Example 2 Wolf leathers £400 sold one year later for £100 buyer said there was a rip (which there wasnt) buyer was refunded £35 to repair the rip.

And i completly agree it is people like them! But what can i do? It anoys me but i cant do anythink to stop him can i? I agree woth regards what gheh can do to stop it....... They reatrict sellers amounts so surely they must be able to do somethink to help them.
 
No I suppose there is nothing you can do. PayPal won't give a toss if you contact them with anything less than a signed confession. You could fight fire with fire and catch him in a scam of your own devising so he can see the folly of his ways before owning up to it, but it may not necessarily work.
 
After reading this lot, I don't I'll bother with eBay ever again.
 
If you use Paypal....ALWAYS...ALWAYS.....withdraw your money straight away.
Paypal/Ebay are useless at helping anyone....just stay away from them.
 
To be honest brought and sold shed loads over the years posted stuff overseas and never had any issues, had broken stuff turn up and got it replaced no worries, stuff that hasnt turned up and has got replaced, must be one of the lucky ones then!!
 
Nothing lucky at all. This is just more eBay paranoia. A couple of cases of criminal behaviour on eBay against the millions of items sold hassle free every single day.
 
After getting my fingers burnt a few times i will never use ebay again, i now sell my stuff on Gumtree, or for sale or swap on facebook.
 
Got burnt buying from america, it went to the wrong address but because they had a sig I got nowt, never had any issues buying here though

Was delivered by Royal Mail but seller wouldn't give me the details or contact them, he didn't care, had his money and ebay ruled in his favour. Some git has my quadruple platinum official award for Bat Out Of Hell........................over five years and it still bloody hurts lol
 
Paypal are thieves!! I sold a phone, some 4 weeks (may have been 6) later buyer opened up a dispute saying it was not as described. They sent it back, it was the same type of phone but not the same one!!! The idiots at paypal kept not reading my emails properly, and said i had received the phone back. Luckily i had taken money out, and they refunded the buyer and said i needed to pay. I refused, and had a number of letters from debt agencies which i ignored. That was some 5 years ago.

As it happened, I then sold the phone for much less, so offered paypal that amount which they refused so got nothing!

Are you having a laugh mate, if it happens to you, you might see it a bit different. One case out of trillions matters if it happens to be me.
 
One case out of a trillion may matter if it is you but it doesn't mean the whole system is faulty. Like I said, more paranoia than reality.
People won't start a post about a transaction that went cleanly as no point so only see negative posts like these that just get people to trot out the same old stories which are very much the exception.

Cash on collection only when selling...

The rules are usually quite good when buying though. I had to deal with a few dodgy sellers and this really helped. I never falsely claimed anything, recorded or not

The person then complains to eBay and gets the feedback removed and in the process you get a slap on the wrist from eBay
 
Clearly eBay favours the buyer and that is because most of the scamming was done by sellers and not buyers so it is to protect the most likely and vulnerable.
That has now created a problem for sellers as scammers can also be buyers and a clear process needs to be followed when dealing with millions of transactions a day otherwise the whole thing would just have to close down.
Be good to see some stats on how many sales are problematic versus how many involve suspect activity and also compare that with online sales from other channels as if items are sent via standard mail the same scams could be pulled by the buyers there too.

One way around it would be to somehow only use credit cards via Paypal (or instead of Paypal using some other conduit) and if the scammer claims they didn't get their item then claim through the credit card company as credit card companies are much harder to deal with and the paperwork required, evidence, time lags etc,. would put a lot of people off.
 
Stopped using paypal years ago, they wriggled and wriggled for months to hang onto my 16 grand. Court action eventually got my money back.

for those not aware ebay and Paypal are one!

Cash on collection was always a valid option (you must specify NO DELIVERY, to block paypal). In fact they strongly suggest you don't accept paypal for collections, as that wouldn't generate a proof.
 
Unless you have a Buy It Now where having a Paypal payment option is now mandatory (even with local pickup)

Sorry you are wrong on this.

Try listing an item - there is no way to switch Paypal off.

"We're making transactions safer for eBay members by updating our accepted payments policy. The policy requires all sellers to offer PayPal as a payment method in their listings"


Several times when selling more expensive items I have put Paypal cannot be accepted, cash on collection, and some interfering busybody has reported the listing and Ebay cancels it and does not reimburse listing fees paid.
 
So is there any online places that would be recommended (appart from the class. here)

I would think it is a program that is running to pick up on keywords. Although saying that, I sold a guitar last week and had Cash on collection in the description and it didn't get removed.
