Ebay WARNING SD memory cards

Hi All, I have just received a Sandisk extreme3 SDHC 8 GB memory card from an ebay seller called "ruidscoutx". Fortunatly I did not pay for this item as I have been reimbursed with help from paypal due to the length of time I waited for it, (nearly a month) & no replies to my e-mails. Since then I have purchased another Sandisk Extreme 3 card (not from ebay). I just thought I would compare the two, & allthough I cant be absolutly certain I think it is a fake, the "dodgy" one does not have the word SANDISK embossed on the back of the card, as does the genuine one,though the sticky lable on the front looks real enough. Needless to say it will be going nowhare near my Nikon D90. So please beware of this possible. ie more than likley ebay scammer.
 
I don't think its a good idea to buy any memory on ebay- as its so easily faked- even if its not, your only saving a couple of £
 
Bought most of my cards (all Sandisk) from ebay and only had one slow one.

I certainly wouldn't pay two or even three times the price from that well-known shop.
 
Its nothing to do with the speed its all about the reduced capacity of the media being misreported so breach the physical storeage limit and kiss your data goodbye.
 
all my cards are from ebay, not a single problem........
 
ive only ever bought cards off eBay and never once had a problem?

I agree. Bought an SD card once. It was fine for about a month after which it split in half! I contacted Sandisc to claim under warranty, once I told them the serial number they confirmed it was a fake.

The card itself along with the packaging looked perfect, it was the poor quality of the card that let it down. Never again!
 
I think this is one of those threads where everyone will have a different opinion as to where to buy cards and where not to buy cards.

Me personally orderd an extreme 111 4Gb card from ebay and eneded up buying one from jessops too as i could not wait to use the camera.
One from Jessops was £30 ish pounds the one from ebay was £14, both packaged exactly the same both exactly the same cards and both hold the same amount of pics, and both down load the same, so to my mind the £14 will always win.

Mind you these were CF cards not sd cards, donot know if thatmakes a difference

Be interesting to know how many people will buy from ebau as oppposed to a shop not on ebay

Consider what your photos are worth. If you downloaded your memories only to find they are lost would you think the couple of quid was money well saved?

Memory card prices shift depending on the upcoming faster cards. Time it well and you can buy them dirt cheap from places like Play.com.

You can also buy second hand from reputable sources such as this forum.

Actually one of the problems was fraudulent high-speed cards.

Never had capacity problems with any.

Aye, if it was only a couple of quid, I would say you are dead right.

However, when the street price is two, three times or even more, and they still do what they say on the tin, year after year, then you don't get my vote.
 
I've had 4 sd cards from dealers on Amazon, and they all play up in use.
The reliable cards I've had have all come from Jessops.
I'd rather pay the extra, and at least there's a shop to go back to with any problems. Plus I've had no problems with getting refunds from Jessops in the past anyway.
 
I buy from Ebay, but always use UK sellers. Never had a problem. I think if you buy from China, you are almost guaranteed a fake.
 
Sonyguy you have been lucky, where do you think mst of the sellers get their cards from? cheap china knock offs ;)
 
I buy off the internet, but never from Jessops!

I tend to use Amazon itself (not marketplace), MyMemory or Play.com


Having said that, on holiday in summer i needed a new 2gb SD, so i got one from Tesco. i'll always buy Sandisk Ultras, and it was £10 compared to Play's £8, so really not bad.
 
I buy all my cards from PICSTOP, never had any issues with cards speed or capacity
 
Picstop for me too. I wouldn't go near ebay for memory cards either. Spend £'000s on camera gear and save £20 by buying a dodgy card, no thanks.
 
Personally I wouldn't touch an ebay card. But it is down to personal opinion and the old sayin of 'you pays your money, you takes your chance'.
 
For the risk and the price difference with CF cards not sure about SD but i use 7day usually.
 
I always use Kingston cards from GoMemory

after Kingston US confirmed the serial markings were genuine
