Hi folks

What is it with people who use stock images of lenses, or worse nick them from KenRockwell.

I bought a lens on Ebay the other day, good price, so I hit the BIN button.

I always ask for the lens serial number and history of an item and run it by NPS to make sure its kosker / not-nicked etc.

So far they have'nt given me a serial number, or provided me with any images of the real item. I doubt it exists. They say they will report me to Ebay if I do not pay. I'm happy to pay once they've given me an image of the actual item to prove it exists. The sellers is newly registered...

They claim they do not have a camera to take a picture for me... I said... well how come you have the lens then? Silence...

get in first, ask ebay to investigate

You bought it and only then decided to query it?

Do you not think it might have been a good idea to check on it before hitting the buy button?

Mmmm..I did think that maybe the buyer should have queried it before commiting, but if the item doesn't exist or is suspicious, I doubt if the prospective buyer would be held fully accountable.

Puddleduck, hope it is sorted out for you :)

I don't normally e-mail each seller and ask is the picture in the item the one you are selling, so no

I only noticed it was stolen from another site after buying.

So yes.. I'm querying it ;)

Well I'm happy to pay but I need to be ensure the item exists.

There are two images on the auction, both stock images.. the close up is off one lens (nicked from KenRockwell), the barrel shot shows a different lens completely. Its quite hard to see on the images, and its only because I do know the difference between the models that I spotted the discrepancy.

Serial number will confirm. Not forthcoming.

ditto. You trusted the seller enough to hit the buy button. If not, why commit to the deal?

i dont know if its a new item or not, but i normally use stock images when selling new/sealed items as i dont want to break the seal to take a pic of the item.

Would you not take a picture of the sealed boxed/packaged item in your own environment? If I was selling a new packed/boxed item, I would still take a picture of it in my home or garden to ensure the buyer knows I actually have the item.

I mean, it's not like you don't have a camera!

If he can't supply the serial number then I would open a dispute with Ebay...

However, as said above - if it's a new item, then seller will be unwilling to break the seal for pics and or serial numbers (unless they are on the box?).

However I am sure that a pic of the box with unbroken seal could be arranged?

No chance of you going there to look, or getting someone (friend or family) local to go?

It sounds extremely dodgy to me.... Good luck with whatever you do.

sometimes, yes.. but no ones interested in a pic of a box.
i normally let my 1600 positive feedbacks let buyers know i can be trusted :)

Yep - List the item, get the listing number then print or write a note with your ebay user name and listing number, take a pic of the item with the note and upload it.

The auction doesn't say whether its new or used. If its new, the serial number will be written on the box.

If its not, the serial number will be on the lens barrel.

Just got this:

lucky escape!

I'm not bothered whether its used or new. Makes no difference to me.

I don't understand your question.

quite often when something is new its worth more money than something second hand.
Also new things sometimes have a warranty whereas second hand things dont.

For example a new Vauxhall Astra is about £15,000 but the equivilant second hand one is about £8000

hope this helps :)

Yep - I always do "due dilidgence" now - I got scammed back in May, and it was a hell of a battle getting my money back, that was for £500 and at the time Paypal only covered the first £150 (and where no help anyway)

paypal are useless. they get their commission and after that they dont give a stuff.

I had a problem with Paypal - my account got grabbed and a load of credits were purchased for a games domain. I was a bit concerned as I was in Borneo at the time - a quick Skype call to PP suspended my account and they refunded within days. That time they were pretty good. Another time when I got some fake memory cards from ebay they could not give a toss and I lost my money.

The moral of my story? Don't use Internet Cafes (I suspect a key logger), be bloody careful what you buy and check your PP account regularly for unusual activity.

Yep - I went onto Ebay to see if my serial number request been answered and it was right in my Inbox under "Alerts"

I didn't report it btw.

Ebay tends to find in favour of the buyer than the seller. For some reason they assume the sellers are the devils cousin whereas the buyer is holier than the Pope. Buyers are just as bad - bid, pay, file report a non arrival complaint and then get their money refunded.
