yeah its just abit strange how they registered on friday and bought this, no contact or emails before hand which i found strange, no offers no nothing

i've just read stories in the past where money has been taken back after a couple of days if its a dodgy transaction thats all, better being safe than sorry

I would maybe transfer the money into your bank account straight away, not sure what else you can do really - maybe request a phone number and have a chat with the buyer, its a specialist product rather than something like a mobile phone so I reckon you will be fine.

dont send untill he/she starts sending txt/msg asking where the item is. or try to contact them. it looks suspect!!!

Great advice if you want to start getting a few negative feedbacks ... :nono:

Contact them when you send it to let them know it is on its way ... Always looks good in my books.

I sold one last week , £200 in my paypal straight away , sent it RMSD emailed buyer letting them know, online tracking confirmed del , emailed buyer , left feedback etc , no response , funds in my bank a/c from ebay took about 4 days.

I'd start the transfer to your bank account straight away - for the future it may be worth doing as I have done and set up 2 Paypal accounts!
The first you use for receipts and payments and its linked to a credit card, the other is linked to your bank account. I receive money into account 1, and if I am not spending it straight away I immediately transfer it to the second account using the Personal transfer option (so no fees for receiving that money) where I can wait till I get over £50 and then send it to my bank account. By having the 1st account linked to a credit card I have some security if they try to get funny with dodgy buyers.

In you're ad, it clearly states "contact me if you have less than 5 feeback before you bid"
They didn't, I think you're well within you're rights to begin some sort of communication before you ship 400 odd quids of lens.
I'd be very wary of a zero feedback 3 day old member ignoring my requests.

yeah my thoughts exactly

thanks for the info people, will transfer it now and email them, see what i get back

Hi,

could i please have a landline number just to confirm via telephone everything is ok as my auction stated anyone with less than 5 feedback contact me before bidding.

once i have a number and have spoken to you i will ship the item to you

sorry if this seems alittle strange, i just want to be sure you are genuine before sending a lens for this amount.

thanks

just sent this

we will see

If you think its dodgy, just refund the money and cancel the auction.

If going ahead then take a few steps to protect yourself

Move the money to your bank acount and don't post untill is shown in your account, no real protection as you have agreed to let paypal plunder your account if it goes wrong, but it does give you time to show if the transaction is fraudulent.

Only post to the address provided by paypal. (Not eBay)

Only post using RM Special Delivery

Get the buyers contact details from eBay and check the phone number and report them if they don't list a land line. Mobile phone is against eBay rules.

Other than that its at your risk.

do they have a verified address in paypal? - if not do not send - you will not be covered by paypal. Tell them that you are not allowed to send the item unless their account is verified - if they do not reply or get the address verified then send a refund, claim a refund of ebay fees and re-list, with restrictions on buyers, such that they must have a paypal account (verfied) at the time of bidding. At all times you must follow paypal policy to the letter to be covered by them

I sold an item to someone with 0 feedback but only for £51, everything went fine. The thing with paypal, is you could send the item, then the buyer can tell paypal that they never received the item, even if you have proof of a signature etc and paypal will just refund the buyer their money and then demand money off you wether you've banked it or not. this is the problem with paypal, it (sort of) happened to me, i sold something in perfect working order then the seller went to paypal and told them it wasn't working without even contacting me, and paypal refunded them, again without even contacting me until after or before i even had chance to ask the seller to return the item to me, i never did see the item again.

I'd ask the seller for cash / cheque payment personally for that amount.

At the end of the day, would you prefer to lose a £420 lens or receive a negative feedback (which you can respond to anyway and say that buyer did not read your conditions of sale regarding bidding with less than 5 feedback.)

It feels a bit suss to me, as its a £250 lens, so I'd be suprised if anyone would register for that specially, buy it for £425 without doing some basic price research.

I'd be worried.

Do lenses have serial numbers? Make sure to get a photo of this lenses serial number before sending.. just incase the buyer is a scammer and decides to pull the ol switche-roo trick and claim "your" lens is dodgy - you will have plenty of evidence.

Regards, James

its making me worried this

think i will now wait until the money has cleared and refund him. the address is unverified which makes it more of a risk

i'd say that was a wise decision :)

Eh? A £250 lens?

Eh? A £250 lens?

As in the going rate is £250 ballpark.. there are at least 4 or 5 versions of the 80-200 and for £400 I'd be looking at the newer Two-touch version with tripod collar not this one which you can find at £200 quite often.

As I said.. research ;)

Hi Whitey I paid for the item as soon as I bid for it, haven't you received it? I'm sorry I didn't contact you first I misread your comments and thought it was regarding overseas bidders.
I would prefer to give you my mobile number for obvious reasons 079********. I'm new to ebay so you'll have to forgive my ignorance but I was under the impression that as long as you received payment everything would be hunky dory lol... anyway give me a call whenever I'm usually up quite late working. I was really hoping to receive it in time for an event on Friday so the sooner the better. :-)

does this sound strange to you?

Well you must have his postal address, stick it into google earth and see what shows up! do a net search on it.

Ebay address registered is the same as paypal

and the address is now showing as Confirmed which is nice to know

seems i am ok with this now would you all agree?

Go for it.

so you will now be "covered" by paypal - just add the special delivary number (10 figure number) to the paypal transaction - job done - if you dont trust paypal, then don't list on ebay - if you do then send the item, as you now have a verified address, and payment.

yeah i will package it together tonight and send tomorrow filling in the tracking number as needed

just seemed alittle fishy at first. thansk for all your help with this TP

If any doubt you could always have a look to see if anyone here is near to his address and see if they could swing past and verify that it is a proper address - not an office block or anything.

Can you search on the electoral roll or similar?

just a quick thanks

lad has item and i have an email saying thanks

all good

i will be, he says he cant leave feedback due to "not being registered long enough" is this true with new accounts?

from what ive heard, you cant leave negative feedback for a seller at all, but i dont understand why a newbie couldnt leave a positive

I think you'll find that's the other way around.

Buyers can leave negative - sellers CAN'T leave negative.

You could still be subject to a charge back yet, although hopefully everything will be fine.

I think it will be fine tbh, if its been sent recorded then as long as OP can provide proof that the guy got it (tracking number or whatever) then paypal will just turn around and say to the buyer that he's lying.

I know people say Paypal favour the buyer always, but I recently sold a PSP and I sent it to the guy in the condition it was described (used but good condition) and he created a dispute saying it was all scratched up and the screen was smudged.
I escalated the dispute, uploaded pics to show the condition before it was sent, and paypal told the buyer to basically buzz off!

For a chargeback to be made, there has to be a reason for the chargeback, and him turning around and saying he didn't get the item (common reason esp if the item wasn't sent recorded) could be proved otherwise.

Morals of the story? ALWAYS sent ANY item recorded through ebay (its only 70p more!), always do ALL communications through ebay (this helps no end in a dispute).
Whereever possible, always pay for postage through paypal (such an awsome service), then all the tracking info will be automatic and you won't have to faff around entering the tracking codes and proof on paypal

as shocking as this website is:
http://www.192.com/

it could prove useful for people in a similar situation
