ebay prices.

A friend sold his car recently, stating that it was a non runner 3 times in the same listing. Person rang him up asking to collect, upon my friend asking if he was bringing a trailor etc... the guy said no im going to get dropped off. My friend explained this was not possible the guy said he was falsely advertising etc....

So the arse has marked it as payment paid, and thus my friend has considerable fees for 'selling' even thought he didnt. Are ebay helping him? not in the slightest.
 
I have had problems with ebay and i'm now band! Woohoo!
 
Re the OPs initial Q, it is just the economics of it - the sellers need to add ebay listing, value and paypal fees to the 'normal' price, offset to an extent by 'normal' transaction costs (i.e. credit card charges).

There is clearly perceived value still from a consumer perspective as otherwise nothing would be selling - how long this will last I would have to question.

I had something like this.

I had a laptop on last year worth no more than £400, some nugget put a bid of £1200 on it right at the end, well i dont need to tell you he did'nt pay but i got hit for fees though and
 
well, a Sony 16-105mm that you can buy new for ~£250 went for £360 on eBay this afternoon ... :thinking: :bonk:
 
I've been on ebay for a few years, and whilst the bargains are not as plenteous as they used to be, there are still bargains to be had. You need to look closely and play the long game.

I bought a 2 year old mint L series lens on ebay for under half the cheapest retail price.

2 weeks later a similar lens went for £300 more than I paid for mine.

For the past 3 weeks I have been watching E-Bay for a manfrotto 804 RC2 Basic pan and tilt head or 460 MG 3 way magnesium head for my tripod and of all the choices I had 2nd hand gear was just short of Amazons retail price or bought for more. Can't understand people who don't know the retail prices before bidding,but there is a mug born every day I suppose:bonk:
 
There aren't any more cheap Buy It nows anymore as the businesses (darius holipor or whatever his name is, filter fantastic) presumably have some sort of software that alerts them to cheap buy it nows and they buy it within minutes..! Very annoying.
 
Funny thing is, if you ask the question on TP 'How much is my Sonyikonon 5-5000mm lens worth?' the automatic answer seems to be 'check out sold items on Ebay'.
But here we are saying Ebay prices are inflated. :shrug:

Maybe in the past but i would'nt now.
 
eBay definitely favours the buyers now. It is still possible to pick up bargains but there's no real logic involved it's almost pot luck. As for selling... the fee's are too high and they virtually insist on paypal which gives them yet another load of fees. Personally If I was selling anything the first place I'd try would be on here and POTN. eBay used to be good but it isn't now.

I tend to only find the bargains after they've sold, stupid (but handy) search for completed items reveals all. As people say there are bargains but few and far between. I think alot more people are comfortable with the idea of ebay and the protection mechanisms in place, there is now an imbalance of power to buyers in my opinion. I just find it good for finding some impossible stuff, I hope it lives!
 
There are people on here that I do/will/would buy stuff off,as they are honest in the descriptions and seem very decent fella and ladies.

If Flashy describes something as mint,for example, then it is.I am the same in the descriptions of gear I sell,With ebay, your taking a bloody big gamble,that may turn sour.

I prefer to buy and sell on here,mostly...........;)
