I have just sold an item on ebay and received the following message from the buyer

"Hi I have just committed to buy your lens. I am at present having trouble with paypal letting me pay through this method. If I could ring them I'm sure it would be resolved straight away but searching for the reasons for the glitch is proving difficult
If you send me your paypal email address then I could use this to make a direct payment to your account. Hope this is acceptable to you
Regards, David"

Any reason why I should not accept his suggestion?

If he pays you buy PP Gift, to save the fees, you have no protection should it go tits up

I wouldn't accept payment like that. It's possible PP have frozen his account due to some problems.

I had this happen to me last week, but I was the buyer.
Nothing wrong with my PayPal (I could log in directly), but ebay just wouldn't give me a login to pay the seller from the pay now link.
I sent them my PayPal address, and they invoiced me for goods and postage, which I paid from PayPal direct.

The problem has now disappeared (for me) so I don't know what was wrong.

Yes i would get there email address and invoice them via paypal.

If you do send them your e-mail then check your Paypal account once you get an e-mail saying they've paid.

There is a scam where the buyer sends a fake payment e-mail supposedy from Paypal.
As long as the payment shows up in your account it should be fine though.

IIRC you or the buyer can specify that it is payment for goods from ebay and I think it asks for auction number or similar. That way there's a log that the payment is related to ebay and not some random payment, though TBH this is more of an issue for the buyer (to prove payment was for item and not just say a gift payment) than for the seller.

Actually, it's the buyer who loses all protection with PP gift.

The seller could turn around and say "What payment? It was a gift".

There was a block on my PayPal account a few weeks ago. All they were asking for was that I confirm my security details, did that and the account was usable again.

Thanks for all replies. He has now paid by the usual method. I've checked my paypal account and the money is there.

There's so many scams around. I am very wary of any out of the ordinary payment methods.
