Hi to all
I was trying to find the little scams that ebay/paypal/amazon etc
pull on the buyers
i was purchasing an item in a different currency and found that paypal were using there own currency rate which was higher than my bank
also amazon have this button that says free 2 day delivery, when i pressed on it ,i signed up for there prime service ,which cost me 99 dollars
any other little scams we should be aware of
please tell

I don't use ebay or paypal, so I haven't a clue about their exchange rate policy. Amazon normally give you a 30 day free trial of Prime. Just cancel it within this period and you won't have to pay. No scam.
 
With the Amazon Prime thing, take the free trial, make your order with free delivery and immediately cancel the free trial of Prime. I have done this twice now.

PayPal are a bank and use their own conversion rate. If you go to your bank and convert currency, they will use their own conversion rate. You cannot expect any bank to ask you which conversion rate you would like them to use. It is your responsibility to ask them first and if you do not like their rate, go elsewhere.

How did you just "sign up to Prime" without giving them your card details? Surely there must have been some point where you thought "hold on, they're going to charge me 99 dollars for this"? There must be a final confirmation button?

Prime is actually very good. You get "free" next day delivery on lots of stuff, so if you order things regularly from Amazon it soon pays for itself. Plus you get their online video and music content and free media storage.

Amazon already have your card details.
One thing that I did find a bit sneaky with Amazon is that I signed up for their Prime Trial but because I did this via my Sony TV, the trial had been setup on Amazon.com.

When I tried to cancel it in my Amazon.co.uk account there was no Prime subscription running and for whatever reason I left it at that. A month later I noticed $99 taken from my account.

I've never had a Amazon.com account and have only ever used Amazon.co.uk, yet it turns out that they are interlinked and share all my stored card details, but the Prime trial didn't show up anywhere on my .co.uk account.

Amazon where great and quickly refunded me, but I also felt it was a bit underhanded.
 
Don't see either as a scam, just a question of looking at T & C's

Munch ...Maybe i worded it wrong i.e. Scam. i should have said hidden charges
John margots....your missing the point the conversion rate and commission is not show on paypal its hidden
Anyone have any other hidden charges sussed

Ah I see. I agree that IS a bit dodgy, I'm surprised they haven't had more complaints and sorted out the issue of the com/co.uk confusion.
 
Amazon did something similar with me. i pre-ordered a book and chose free delivery, next thing I knew I was signed up for Prime. I used it for a month, and found it very good, then cancelled. I just don't buy that much from them and don't want the other benefits. It put me off them though and I prefer to shop elsewhere particularly as their prices aren't so good anymore nad you have to pay more attention to who and what you are buying than you used to.

not hidden that well. There is a link on the home page and another on the Money tab.

Having never bought an Apple product in my life, the first answer would be no.
To the second part, if I'm paying for anything, or signing up for something where charges may apply, then yes, always.

what currency are you buying in and are you buying in a different currency?
are you across borders?
if so you are at the mercy of the exchnge rate
