Ebay buyer potential problem?

Just sold the Sigma 20mm yesterday on Ebay and posted it today :)

But I'm getting a little worried as the buyer who is a polish dude but with a UK address has started asking questions about the lens after I've posted it. I've received the funds via paypal and his email domain appears to be a polish photographic review site so I'm hoping he's just excited before receiving the lens.

Wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and if this all sounds normal as it's a first for the "post-posting question time from a buyer" for me!

Cheers
G

Emm, what sort of questions?

Here's the email, in retrospect I'm sure it's ok unless he has some way of retreiving the funds back from Paypal??? Forgot to say, the address was a restaurant in West Sussex, probably a friend's place?

Hello Graham,
I have 2 question`s about this lens.:)
- Tell me with body you use with this lens?
- I hear about good and bad copy 20 f/1.8. How preform on full aperture in your opinion?
Thank`s for your time:)
Cheers.
ps. Sorry for my english - (is not my native language:)

I think he's a bit late to ask. I'd also get the funds transferred to your bank account just in case. Not sure how recharges work though, Paypal are a law unto themselves.

Aye, did the funds transfer immediateley. I don't anticipate using Ebay for a while now so I may put a block on Paypal through my bank just in case. Might be a bit para so I've not been stung yet through ebay and I think my days are numbered hehe

You're probably going to be ok, I reckon. But I used to be a fan of ebay having bought and sold several items succesfully on it. But now I'm not so sure. Every search I do throws up a thousand things for sale in HK or Singapore or wherever and I'm left with the notion that, reputable as ebay the company might be, they're now open to every dodgy ******* on the planet having a go at selling something to every dumb schuck on the planet. Or maybe I'm just becoming cynical....

I had a dispute filled against me through Paypal last year. Not my fault I might add, Royal Mail lost the DVD I had sold and the buyer jumped the gun a bit and filed the claim before emailing me to say it hadn't arrived. :bang:

I'm guessing it still works the same way but what happened was Paypal lock the funds in your account while the dispute is ongoing, so the advice above to get the transfer done quick is good. You then have a couple of weeks to sort it before 'they' step in and give the money back.

I don't think it's anything more than someone getting a bit over-excited about a new toy tbh - that's how it looks to me anyway.

On the subject of the address, I only sell to a confirmed Paypal account if the item is worth more than a tenner or so.

Did you keep a note of the serial number of your lens? Just in case the "I hear about good and bad copy 20 f/1.8" is a precursor to a bait and switch.....

i've made 1600 sales on ebay.. sold quite a few to polish people living in the uk and never had a problem.
if he paid for it with paypal then he's allowed to open a paypal dispute if he's not happy with the item.
it doesnt sound like much of a scam IMHO. people often ask me question after i've sent the item.

Hi if he uses a credit card to fund the payment he can do a charge back on the credit card, if it was pay pal funded they will issue if he complains to them opens a dispute and may refund his account and your account will go into negative then they will try to recoup cost any way they can. sorry for the bad news but that's haw it can work sometimes. if they ask questions after purchass then if it's classed as a private sale then tuff on them... if he can prove he is covered under distance selling laws the tuff on you, E-bay is getting harder for the seller, and buyers know it.

regards Mark

He sounds a bit excited to me with a few questions :) what's his feedback like? I have asked questions after buying something and been asked questions without problems. If your listing is straight and you can prove you've sent it then you have nothing to worry about :D

He's got 17 feedbacks and all positive so 100%. Most of the history appears to be either photographic or electical related. I think it'll be ok but time will tell and at least I've got the address of the restaurant that it was sent to so if it goes sour then initially the threat of repeated visits by nasty friends from London screaming "rat" could be a nice bargaining chip hehe! Nah, that wouldn't be nice.

Anyway, many thanks for the advice and fingers crossed!!!

None of this would be an issue if someone here bought it first ;)

Was this restaurant his "Confirmed Address"?

If not my gut feeling says you are going to get a chargeback and lose the money and the lens. Hope I'm wrong.

just sounds excited mate..i get like that :-)

I used to think Ebay was awesome, and paypal even more so. At present, after hearing all the hastle with it all, i've fell out with it, and I think i'm going to try and avoid using either.

I'd be paranoid fella, it's better than thinking it'll be fine, and then it turns out not to be.

Its such a shame. I don't like selling stuff on eBay with paypal anymore.
Got charged £40 in eBay fees for selling my Camera, and £8 in paypal fees.
I know they've got to make a profit, but 10%? That's not fair.

Also, tried buying a 400d (way back before I got my 350d) and it all went tits up, the guy couldn't deliver, opened a dispute, guys paypal account was locked, he disappeared, and I couldn't have my money refunded for several weeks, along with around 12 other people.

I used to sell loads on ebay but have decided to close my shop down as its not worth the hassle especially with buyers and paypal being really unfair, I had a chargeback put on £350 item two months after it was bought, I had the full tracking number and the DHL website showed the item as recieved yet paypal chose it against me and took the funds out so it was a hit, I'd take the funds out and instruct your bank not to let paypal withdraw funds

No it wasn't. I've got messages and emails stating to deliver to the restaurant so I guess this would be my defence with paypal. I think he probably just uses this address so he can buy from people in the UK who won't trade with non-UK people. He bought a lens for a similar value recently so I'm hoping all will be ok.

This is his ebay id: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/empikat3

The lens was sent by special delivery so there's full proof of it being sent to the address he specified in writing so hopefully if the brown stuff hits the fan Paypal will have some common sense :)

Hey,

sorry to be negative but if you send something to an address other then the one on his paypal and if its not confirmed, paypal doesn't cover you for anything regardless of how many emails or messages you have

I sold some audio stuff on ebay to a Polish guy who paid by Paypal. I shipped as agreed etc. and he then contacted me by email saying the goods had not arrived. One hour later he emailed me again and asked me to confirm which address I had sent it to (by then I also had the courier's confirmation of delivery). He then admitted that the address that he had in ebay and paypal was his old address and not his current one. He went to his old address and was able to pick up the parcel okay. It was a genuine mistake and it all turned out okay in the end. Most of our Polish friends are good guys. I think that he is just getting excited about using his new lens. I shall cross my fingers for you.

Paypal will have some common sense :)

Actually common sense dictates never send to an unconfirmed address :)

Paypal will not side with you if he opens a dispute. Doesn't matter how many e-mails have gone back and forth.

Never send to an unconfirmed address if paid by Paypal. Ever.

I automatically refund any payments from an "unconfirmed address" and if they cannot or will not pay another way I re-list.

Yup, Paypal have no common sense and no clue about customer service

Phew, just double checked paypal and the postal address on there is the restaurant. It's not confirmed but at least that's the address on file with paypal. I think this will be ok but will find out after 1pm today!

It's a PLC restaurant so I'm hoping they wouldn't be daft enough to get involved with something dodgy.

Just a wee update, here's an email he sent. I think it'll be ok and I shouldn't let his poor English translate into him being untrustworthy.

Cheers for the advise, reassurance and for those who scared the **** out of me, many thanks indeed! Just kidding! ;)

The reply, as I was chatting with him about the Sigma 18-55mm F2.8 also:

Hello Graham,
Right now i can`t check this delivery. This lens was sent to my brother work. Matthew in on a vacation in Egipt and come back to GB in wednesday. I fly to Brighton 05 august and then check this lens on my 5D. Immediately sent reply to you with info. I know - everything is ok. I have good presaging :)
Returning to Your`s earliest e-mial i wants thanks for complete feedback. Very nice pictures:)
Use my mutilate english i tell you somthing. In past i had this Sigma 18-50 f/2.8. I buy this lens in USA on ebay in January 05 an use with 20D 1,5 year and sold to my friend. Exchange on Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 with better on full aperture and batter AF - (this IMO primary Sigma weaknes, i have min. 10% missed shots, specialy in low light situations). 2 weeks ago my friend call my and
It has said about problem with broken aperture in this lens. I check this problem in services and as it happens "open secret" - in longest use (after warranty) this type crash is "normal". I know this is expensive problem and I advise you think sale this lens in near future. Tamron 17-50 IMO is better option (whit good copy of course). Better IQ, better AF ( unfortunately more noisy ;).
I more time sorry for my english.
Cheers:)
