I notice that ebay are changing their fee structure with most prices going up pretty much across the board, at a cursory glance it looks like some listing prices are going up by as much as 300%!
http://pages.ebay.co.uk/pricechange08/

What really galls me though is that they are also increasing most of the percentage final value fees. Remember these are PERCENTAGE increases so are on top of any inflationary increases they get from price rises of items sold. Now that they have secured a virtual monopoly in this market they seem to feel free to do what they like. As if they aren't making enough profit as it is! :annoyed:

Does the Monopolies Commission not have any power over this organisation?

I started selling on Ebay in 1998 and stopped for a couple of years around 2003. When I returned I couldn't believe how much the fees had risen and they seem to just go up and up whilst the level of service offered decreases.

At least I see they've finally been forced to publish a customer service number - they got quite a shock a couple of years ago when I phoned them to complain about something. The first thing they asked was "where did you get this number?" Apparantly at that time their "customer service" number was ex-directory!

The thing is that ebay is so useful. If you sell something now it generally goes onto ebay and they know that they have the market sewn up. I hate it, I love it, I worry about it. Unfortunately I use it.

The thing thqat makes it even worse are the fees that Paypal then charges. I have noi idea how anyone can afford to sell a cheap item and get paid via paypal.

With 'instant' bank transfers coming to the fore, for me Paypal is a thing of the past, unless I buy anything off there.

I'd never sell on there for various reasons, but for those who want a convenient way to free up cash then I guess they have you over a barrel.

I'll certainly try and sell on here and avoid Paypal. Can't stand anything associated with Ebay :annoyed:

They're just the latest of a growing list of organisations who are greedy beyond words; we're already being squeezed for electricity and gas etc. etc

eBay is on it's way out
Now is the perfect time for some one else to step in with a new online auction service.
It wouldn't take much to make everyone jump ship

Look at myspace and yahoo. Everyone thought they had their areas sown up and now everyone uses facebook and google.
eBay have their arrogant heads stuck in the sand

If only that were true Gary!
I agree about Yahoo etc, but there are a few other auction sites
out there that I have stubled across from time to time, but very small in comparision
you can't blame sellers for wanting to reach the wider audience. Unfortunately "Ebay" is the name that everyone remembers,
rather like windows / linux and a host of others
What its needs is some 14 year old wizz kid to get to grips with it and that
would / should start to see the demise. The sooner the better as far as I am concerned

Looks like they've deleted the prices page for some reason... It will prolly come back with even HIGHER prices! :bang:

thats very true - nothing is out there yet.. but it will come

the problem with eBay is when you hear the word eBay what is the first thing you think of? For most people its getting ripped off (either by ebay, paypal or nigerians)

It was a nice place to play a few years ago, but
sadly, your comment is all to true these days

i think the downward slide started when the ceo changed earlier this year...

the downward slide started when ebay/paypal concentrated totally on being as greedy as possible whilst ignoring the fact their customers were getting ripped off left right and centre.

i have just read all the details - in detail and (from my reading) anyone selling a £600 camera item starting at £50 or more (for example) is not going to face an increase - read the details...:rules::rules::rules::rules::rules::rules:

Thats beside the the point overall the fees have gone up, with the advantage going to sellers who have high priced stock.

If you look at the fee changes for items under fifty pounds you can see the fees have gone up a large degree which will effect a lot of sellers including myself.

Also the basic shop rental has increased from £6 to £14.99 per month which is a lot to pay when no one is buying anything cos theres a ****ing recession on, that you pay for the privilege of selling items at a fixed price. :bang::bang::bang::bang:

This site in New Zealand was started by a couple of students who went on to sell it for NZD 700M, to Yahoo if I recall correctly.

Surely that's an incentive to someone to get one going in the UK. ;)

In a statement to shareholders a few years back Ebay made it clear that their longterm goal was to move away from their "electronic fleamarket" image to become an online marketplace for companies such as Sotheby's and other highend sellers.

Obviously they couldn't just do a sudden volte face and stop serving their core customer base, so what they have chosen to do is to drive the small guy out by gradually ramping up fees until it becomes inviable for those selling nick-nacks and other low revenue-earning items to continue.

The time is coming when someone like Google or Yahoo will be able to set up a viable alternative to Ebay, which will (hopefully) end up as a shadow of it's former self....

clearly some price go up others don't - those selling photography gear may not be affected as much as those selling clothes (this is a photography forum) ebay is changing - i think for the worse, but it is favouring the big sellers - if you cannot cover £8.99 per month increase in costs is it worth running a shop? the new ebay search engine is designed to favour large sellers and not the small seller (including me, and possibly you) time to move on.....

Hi vectis auctions run a web-shop from e-bay dealing in die-cast cars, they are a premier die-cast seller, but i have never brought from them, there is a time to sell and a time to buy, e-bay reflects the current markets so finely its almost a mirror image , if there's no recession the stuff gets a good price, if there's one looming buy, buy, buy. never failed. made a small fortune from doing that. and somtimes it's a gamble.

Regards Mark.

Ok so now you have done a 180 and changed your view from your earlier smug comment about reading the details, i would love to be able to find an alternative to ebay but at the moment, perhaps you can do us both a favour and find a viable solution....

Thank you in advance... smugly :D

Vectis originally took all the stuff they now sell on Ebay to the toyfairs and I used to hoover up loads of bargains from them - they only seemed to be able to value Corgi or Dinky, so anything like Tekno or vintage Solido went for pennies - ahh good times :naughty:

Well it looks like its time to get my one online!! I bought the original site from someone and it was aimed at a totally different niche market but I may open it up to all

i can't but i'm working on it - sorry if i seem smug - not intended, sorry (:shake::shake::shake:) i was a fan of ebay - much less so now, time to find another option, but this dependent of what you sell/buy i still think the best option is to find the best way to use ebay....for the moment

Its getting far too expensive to sell, Ebay fees are 9% for some items + another 4% now you are forced to offer Paypal.

:shake: the new ebay shop fees are ridiculous i will be closing mine

i think the final value fee is pretty high - the company i work for does half our business on amazon marketplace - they dont have a great system for adding items but much like ebay in that respect - you would need to have the barcodes of the items you are selling

Well I shall no longer be using ebay.
I always thought the fees were way too high anyway.

They can STUFF IT

If this is the consensus across the world, I reckon eBay will be back tracking pretty soon.

Doubt it, this discussion has been going on for the last 10 years. For every seller who leaves another will take their place and that will continue to be the case until someone comes up with a viable alternative....

... until someone comes up with a viable alternative....

I reckon the only way it could be done would be for some ultra rich speculator to throw a billion at it all in one go. Apart from needing the infrastructure set up and ready to go and the massive marketing and advertising it would need at start up, it would need 'seeding' with hundreds of thousands of items at launch to draw buyers and sellers away from ebay all at once.

Could be done though and that billion could be worth several billion before too long... or it could crash and burn...

Anyone got a spare billion to give it a try?

Flashy

.....or buy an existing, but under-performing site and throw similar amounts at it. In the meantime hell will have frozen over....

Plenty of companies have tried (and failed) and anyway, in 5 years' time we'd all be moaning about the fees the new site was charging.

I ****ing hate ebay - every time I've tried to buy anything off there in the last few months I've been sniped at the last second by someone with a bot. I hate it!

Craigslist.org can sometimes be good for selling/buying though it's not an auction site. If we can get more people over to the UK version it might turn in to something big :)
