With decisions that change like the weather, last week I decided that I needed a 300mm zoom. £37 on ebay and I've got a Tokina 75-300.

Took a while to get the camera to recognise it, and had a brief moment where the auto focus packed in (dirty contacts?) but all in well worth the money!

I was starting to believe that ebay bargains didn't exist any more!

That is a bargain! I would have been afraid of being ripped off

I still stick by eBay, just make sure I'm careful.. got my 17-55mm on eBay for a very good price, about £100 less that I was expecting to pay and have sold lots of camera gear on there to very happy photographers.

The only problem with ebay, is that it can become addictive ;)
I haven't bought one piece of equipment from a camera shop for nearly three years.

Very addictive! As long as you have your wits about you and ask the right questions you can get a good deal!

On the days when I can snag a bargain, it's a wonderful and addictive site.

On the days when I get sniped at the last minute, it's a glorified car boot sale run by charlatans.

:)

Never bid when you are very tired, or worse still when you are drunk! Amazing what effect "beer goggles" have on appreciating the finer virtues of the opposite sex, or camera equipment.;)

The only thing i dont like about ebay is the incestuous link to Paypal.

It's not an incestuous link, ebay own paypal! You don't have to use paypal, ebay have just set it up to make paypal their preferred outlet!

Best times to look for bargains on ebay are early saturday and sunday mornings. I watched a 50mm F1.8 go for less than £45 the other weeK!

I believe that's exactly the point; eBay are their parent company.

For eBay UK sellers, it's been mandatory to offer PayPal as a payment option for most categories since April 2008. :rules:

eBay Policy said:
eBay requires all sellers listing on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie to accept PayPal in their listings with the exception of listings in the categories of cars, motorcycles, aircraft, boats, caravans, trailers, trucks (commercials), services and property categories. Sellers listing on eBay.ie are currently exempt from this requirement, but must offer PayPal in their listings if they wish them to appear in search on eBay.co.uk or eBay.ie. In most cases, other additional payments options, which are currently permitted onsite, may also be provided.

Sellers who list in certain categories or transactions may additionally be required to offer PayPal as the only payment method offered on a listing, and this will be messaged accordingly within the listing flows.

Dave is right and i hate the way flea bay and scam pal fleece us, if listing something that you recomend viewing, always make sure the listing stretches over at least one weekend ;)

Ebay and Paypal certainly make a charge, but rather less than a live Auction house. But what they offer is massively wider audience.
However I tend to be a Buyer rather than a seller.
Pay pal is a good system and easily the best when buying from abroad. Have you tried buying through the banking system.

I managed to get a bargain in the form of a second Sony NEX-5 body on eBay recently (in order to convert to infrared). Only £175 incl P&P. It was spotless, too. Not too common, but I agree it's nice when it happens.

Would you buy a new lens of ebay. I am after a Nikon 55-300 af-s vr lens and have seen it at £219. Second hand ones are going for that.

there are still second hand bargains to be had, but as far as new? Amazon (or many other retailers) is usually cheaper.

selling is hard work, but there is always someone willing to pay you for anything and everything., better than throwing it in the bin! Higher priced stuff I usually try and sell on forums first....
