Does anything know about buying things off an Ebay auction where it is sold under warranty. For example, someone is selling something they have just been given as a gift. How do you buy it from them and then register so that you have it covered under warranty? This has always been a grey area for me and after having the Nokia N95 that I bought off Ebay last year die on me in December, I have not been so keen on buying electronics off Ebay.

I think it depends on the specific manufacturer and how they go about registering products. It may be you just need to fill out the warranty card and send to manufacturer, otherwise it might be you also need the receipt from retailer too.

Yeah I was going to ask, but the person doesn't accept Paypal because of some bad experience, and there is no way I am going with Bank Transfer on Ebay. I think you have to get the receipt, because certainly Canon's website says you need proof of purchase.

Generally you need the receipt, but some products have dates built into their codes and manufacturers that do that will usually work from those.

Philips, for example, offer a 2 year warranty on things like toothbrushes and shavers, if you have the receipt it is two years from the date of receipt, if not then two years from date of manufacture.

I spoke to Canon about this when I bought stuff from ebay and they said they would go from date of manufacture though people on here have disputed this I haven't had to try it out so don't actually know. I bought an unused camera on ebay but I got a receipt for that and that was good enough to get the cashback from canon. My query with them was for L lenses.

I do know about philips as they replaced a toothbrush for me based on the date code as I didn't have the receipt.

If they don't accept paypal then stay well away would be my advise.

To sell on EBay a user MUST accept paypal

QFT, plus their location was somewhere in the Hebrides, slightly suspicious that one...

The search goes on.
