Ebay advice

Also bear in mind it's a two way street. What if you get the cash and don't send the camera. The buyer doesn't know you, so he's probably worried you'll take his money and not send the camera.

I agree with you but there are some points (see first few posts in thread) that make me a little wary. ie asking me to send that same day and then saying he had to pay by echeque but would I still send it if he showed me a screenshot of his account to show he had the money.

sorry, I can't find myself rereading the thread, but - is it a paypal normal money being sent or some mistical echeque system ?

I'm not sure what it is to be honest. Paypal as usual is very vague with their description. :(

The story is that the guy asked me by pm one afternoon if I could send the camera that day if he did buy it now. I said that was fine provided I had the money in my account before I posted it. He messaged me back a hour or so later saying something was up with his credit card so he had to pay by echeque. He then said could I still send the camera that day to which I replied no I wouldn't without the money in my account. He said he could show me a screenshot of his account showing the money in it. I still said I wouldn't send it and offered a refund. I also said I wouldnt be able to post until this coming week as I have been in Norway last week. He said that he still wanted to go ahead with the sale.
The echeque cleared in paypal middle of the week but is now "pending". Some posts above in this thread hint that the buyer can actually do a "chargeback" whereby he gets all his money back. If he does this after I have sent the camera I have lost everything. I have just bought a 1DmkIV so badly need the money from the sale of some old gear includuing this camera sold on ebay.

This help?

1. NEVER ACCEPT ECHEQUES FROM AN UNCONFIRMED ADDRESS - if you do, and they reverse the transaction, you are NOT protected by PayPal

2. CONTACT YOUR BUYER BEFORE SHIPMENT - send a recorded letter to the address (a receipt maybe). This will require their signature and will prove they live their.

3. INSTRUCT YOUR COURIER TO DELIVER INSIDE - under no circumstances should they hand the parcel to anyone who 'appears' from an alleyway or come in through the gate at the same time.

4. CHECK YOUR BUYERS FEEDBACK - first stop for many, see what others have said

5. EMAIL THE BUYER - try and obtain a telephone number (landline would be best)

6. FOR HIGH VALUE ITEMS - check the electoral register for their address, updated regular and is a good source of information

7. DO THE BUYERS NAME AND ADDRESS MATCH THE ACCOUNT DETAILS? - Check that the PayPal account belongs to the buyer, if it doesn't, refuse and report immediately.

If you are in any doubt at all, then refuse the payment and request an alternative method. Genuine buyers will be happy to do this, scammers will be determined to pay by this method.

drives one mad to know all the junk to deal in evilbay .
Damn right you are. I've bought and sold on here with no problems at all. On ebay it's another story. Obviously issues with selling this camera. I also had issues when I bought a 100-400 last year that was really not as described. Got my money back but it was a long process and a real pain in the rear. :bang:

paypal are nasties!

Buyer may have added his bank details to his paypal account, rather than his debit card details. this generally causes an echeque....

If your still concerned give paypal a call on 020 8605 3000 (rather than their expensive number) select option 1..... talk it through with them, and express your concerns.

but most definetely ensure that the address he wants it posted to is the registered address, and thus your protected.... also, use a courier..... rather than royal mail...? deals here. generally give you real time tracking.... txt/email alerts about delivery.

Theres nothing you can do, its the way paypal and ebay work. If the buyer opens the package and claims you put a brick inside, it would be your word against his. This is why I avoid fleabay.
