Smaller shops like ours are allowed to open.. we only close xmas day..

but everyone thougth o tesco would be open!! and told us so.. when asking for stuff we no longer had coz they couldn't get thier butt in t gear and shop yesterday ..

why would you shop on ester sunday??? i do not get it and i am talking a small co-op they were not just getting bread and milk daft sods

All the Tescos up here were open (and mobbed).

She must have bagged the last bottle of scotch in the shop

Normal shopping day here :D Everywhere seems to be open as normal!

no but should have been i just didn't look at what i had typed... getting up at 4 am is not a help..

Call me 'old fashioned 'but I can remember, as a child, everything being shut, every Sunday.
In my family household, Sunday was church service in the morning,a family Sunday lunch when we got back, a family walk with the dog,a family trip to the park, playing football in the garden with my dad,a visit to relatives,a trip to the beach.......... Halcyon days :)

Im all for personal choice, but nowadays a family day seems to consist of a trip to the nearest Mega centre to spend money you dont have, lunch in a 'themed' restaurant, then hours stuck in traffic !!!!!!

Being the father of 18 and 16 year old fashion conscious females, who simply must have that dress, shoes, jeans, top etc I find myself being drawn into the occasional trip to the 'temple of retail delights in Manchester or Liverpool.

When I suggest a nice walk,or a trip to the coast, they just look at me with an expression that only teenage girls can give their father !!!!!!!!!!

Im thinking of moving to the Western Isles......... I hear they padlock the swings on a Sunday

I love days like Easter Sunday, we can shop online and shop all around Easter so a day off is quite nice.

That is my point we should have a day off, why do we need the shops open on a sunday. i loved living in Germany and doing the whole Breakfast in alex's then maybe a nice long walk after lunch followed by Coffee and cake. not dragging my kids to do blinking food shopping

This is one of my huge bug bears, especially at Christmas.

I used to work in a shop. You'd get people coming in with a smarmy tone saying..."ooooh, I bet you don't want to be working on Christmas eve". I always wanted to reply with something along the line of "Well, if you could sort your shopping out for one of the other 360 odd days of the year, I wouldnt blinking have to!"

Proper winds me up. Shops should be closed on Sundays, all Christmas, bank holidays and any other 'main' holidays like easter.

Thank you thank you thank you.....

my thoughts exactley

In my honest opinion, all chain stores and such like should be closed on 3 days of the year. Buses shouldn't run, hospitals etc should be skelenton staff (no pun intended) and the minimal amount of people should work as possible.

These days are, New years Day, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. 2 of which are Christian festivals. Since we live in a historically Christian Country we should, as a country, observe these days as National Holidays and unless it's REALLY important to work, we shouldn't.

Christmas Eve too

This leads me on to another mini rant! People moan about how commercialised Christmas has become. Yet these are the same people that are waiting outside DFS at 6.45am on Boxing Day morning ready for the sales.

And the only 'shops' that should be open 24 hours is garages. Except holidays as above.

People may still have places to go, friends and relatives to visit and may not drive so public transport although my least form of transport is a lot cheaper than the double rate you'll be charged for a cab on those days. Hospitals will be on reduced staff as people won't have appointments etc. so staff for those purposes would, I imagine, have the day off.
As for having New Years day off that is just a bank holiday on account of people getting drunk the night before and being in no fit state for work. Personally if I wasn't spending time with family, I'd work it.

Why? If you're going to close for the Christian Holy Days, you'd better shut all the shops for all the other religions too. While we're at it, shut all the pubs when the other shops shut, including holidays, 5:30PM etc. I suppose you could take it even further and shut EVERYTHING down out of normal office hours - no power, hospital care, emergency services. If it's OK for vicars to work on Sundays, why should anyone else be exempt?

If the sales start that early, what time do the staff have to be in ??
Im sure we can live without having to spend, spend, spend for two or three days of the year......... and those who need their fix of retail therapy can always use the web !!

I remember DFS opening at 7am on Boxing day. Can't remember if it was Christmas 2009 or 2008. There were also ads for one company who's sale started 5am Boxing Day but I can't remember who that was.

If people didn't shop at these times then companies wouldn't be able to justify opening.

If people can manage without public transport on Christmas and New Years Day, what makes Easter Sunday so different? Christmas and Easter are the 2 big Christian festivals.

In remote areas even now, there are often only one or very few buses to and from the main town each day and only on working days. Like Weardale. If they all manage, how come the townies don't?

I work on the buses driving people into Newcastle city center on Easter I have to admit it's funny as hell seeing the look on their faces when they realise all the shops are closed and theres nothing for them to do in the city center, most of them hop on to the next bus back home.

what about those of us that work 6 days a week and only have time to shop on sundays?

See that's where there's an amazing thing, it's quite astounding, honestly completely revolutionary, so amazing that there should be a museum made especially for it....

online shopping, delivers til 10pm if I'm not mistaken or even ....and this is really truely astounding, 24 hour shopping!!

both completelye revolutionary.

It's 1 Sunday of the year and there's a Bank Holiday on both "working days" either side of it. Easter Sunday should be treat the same as Christmas Day IMHO. This is a traditionally Christian country, they are the biggest Christian Festivals (one to celebrate the birth of Christ and the other to celebrate Christ rising from the dead).

sorry but i dont see why a nationwide shutdown caused by a so called religious day should be inflicted on the rest of us that dont do religion.

yeah okay theres online shopping but that doesnt help you if you need it NOW.

So everything closing down on Christmas day infurates you?

And you also choose to live in a historically Christian country?

christian how? im pretty sure last i heard less and less attend church, on what basis should everyone abide by christianity just because it bullied out any other belief?

christmas has nothing to do with religion in my eyes and more to do with family spending time together.

(thread de-rail ahoy)
