I thought this had been mentioned before, I did a search but nothing came up.

Woken up this morning at 4.30am, by an Ambulance with it's siren wailing. Not much traffic at that time of the morning, why the need for the blaring siren? I know they need to get to places safely and without colliding with unaware people and vehicles. But surely a blue light would be enough?

We do get a lot of wailing sirens at silly am, but surely there are time regulations on activating sirens?

Only if it's an ice cream van. And don't call me Shirley.

Seriously, you could be grateful if they're for you or a loved one at some point in the future. If there's a junction, then they'll usually use the siren regardless of visible traffic and time of day if going against the signal or priority. On a straight it will depend on many factors. Middle of the night the traffic may be quieter, but there are usually more parked vehicles and obstructions.

No, driver's discretion. They might have seen something/someone you couldn't

This ^ ^ ^
@jonbeeza You were in bed, the emergency vehicle driver wasn't.

Having witnessed on numerous occasions the stupidity of people who don't get out of the way, I'm all for them being as obvious as possible. It might be your family trapped next time when seconds can count. :)

You dont live near to traffic lights do you? My first flat was right by some. Worst decision ever. Sirens, drum n bass boy racer stereos, revving engines etc at all hours. Utter pita. Even worse the flat didnt have double glazing.:hungover:

You know what I cannot comprehend how you can actually complain about this of all f*****g things in the world...honestly is this a serious thread or are you taking the p***, I bet if you or someone you loved were in urgent need of an ambulance you'd want it there asap on blues and twos no matter the time of day..

Overreacting much? Flippin eck.

Of course Id want it there asap. Couldnt care less if it had blues and twos on or not as long as it got there. If it did have them on and people along the route were annoyed, I couldnt care less either, however they have every right to be annoyed if they want.

And anyway I was complaining more about my stupidity in setting up home on a main road right next to a set of traffic lights.

uncalled for that, the man was just posing up some thoughts.
I actually agree with him, so many false alarms and everyone calling 999 because there hamster has farted.

waking up possibly 1000s of people at 4:30am is uncool I would be miffed.

i live on one of the main routes out of town that the services use, you tend to tune them out after a while
Fully agree. I've lived next to railroads, airports. In central London, lots of sirens 24/7, and now rowdy lions and elephants. I just tune them out.

However I took the OP as a genuine question regarding protocol and not just a negative moan or rant.

I live about a quarter mile from a ambulance depot and the route they take going in towards town is very near my street which they access through a Camera controlled Buses only gate, Siren can be heard leaving the depot all the way through the bus gate and up the street which runs parallel to mine, the street they use is apprx 500 -800 yards long and straight, no traffic lights but sirens on all times of the night. Yes you phone to complain of unnecessary use of sirens but you get the standard crap sirens need to be on to alert other users. Strange thing is you go to a posh part of town with all types of junctions where all the councillers live they only speed along the streen with blue lights (fair enough) but never a bloody siren on.

Of course I would want the emergency services there is soon as possible. I am not really as angry about the noise as you may think. The post was done more in fun, than in annoyance really. You took my post too serious.

Exactly, and that is all it was. I did not post in anger at all. (y)

It's to waken up the milk delivery & mail delivery drivers who are still half asleep + to get taxi drivers away when parking in the middle of the road. :D Oh & don't forget the `clubbers` who are on their way home & wouldn't notice the flashing lights, they'd think they were still in the nightclub!

my post was directed at the OP not you, I didn't even read your post

In your opinion and that fine, but I've several friends work in the ambulance service and other emergency services I know how hard they work and also the strict protocol they have for activation of both lights and or sirens they don't just do it at will they are always and only activated for good reason, false alarm or not how are they to know in that instant the contempt or miffedness should be directed at the cretins making said calls

If that's the case okay however I don't really see the fun in the post for the reasons I outlined to Mr Bump

Jesus....Wrong side of the bed much?

As I was still in bed at the time of posting I'm going to have to say NOPE to that assertion

You can't beat a Siren first thing in the morning to set you up for the day

Oh I see not "that" type of siren, sorry ...

Some of us do have very tough jobs, and I take my hat of to the people in the emergency services. They do a fantastic job. But as I said some of us do have tough jobs, and I too had a very tough job. I worked for many years in the catering industry, doing food deliveries on below minimum wage for years. I then went on to minimum wage, and for that I was working eight hours at six days. I would be working evenings until the very early hours, delivering food to some nice people and some not very nice people. At times I would be threatened beaten up roughed up, and have a knife pulled on me. All for the sake of a meal, or a few quid that I carried on me.

So when I use to go out to work, I would never know if I was going to be attacked robbed of my money or meals, or my car. I would sometimes get asked to take the person here there or wherever, and if I did not I would risk getting a thump.

So, there are a few of us out there with tough jobs :)

PS

It was horrible explaining to the missus, why we had no money that week. Just a black eye to show for a weeks work :(

It was probably some obese lard arse couldn't reach the fridge so called 999
