Hi all. I purchased a 135 mm 2.8 Nikkor from eBay. It was item no 280825666370. Unfortunately it is missing the rabbit ears. I was going to use it with my Nikon fm3a. Is it going to cause a problem? What should I do?

No problem at all. The ears are only to provide compatibility with cameras pre-1977, in classic Nikon style (keeping as much compatibility across the board as possible). The rabbit ears don't actually "communicate" with your FM3A at all.

The more technical terminology is that rabbit ears are for non-AI/Nikon K bodies, whereas your AIS spec lens will work fine with your AI/AIS spec body.

Thanks for the response. Would it effect the value if they are missing?

Personally? Don't try and take this the wrong way, but I'm not entirely sure why you paid so much in the first place, considering a decent boxed example very recently went for £89:

The one you bought was described better and more openly, although the fact that the seller did not allude to why the rabbit ears were not attached at all would make their description far from complete IMO.

Any discussion on effect of value is purely hypothetical, as you will only really know if you ended up selling it. From a practical point of view, if you stressed in the description that it made no difference at all to any bodies post-1977 then that would help a lot of potential buyers - especially if you emphasised full compatibility with all digital bodies, which is what a lot of people will be buying for.

Nikon still evidently do have the parts though, if you are comfortable fitting it yourself (it's just two screws!): http://photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00ZnRj
and I'm sure any repair store will have some spare from broken Nikon lenses.

Yes I know what you mean. I hadn't done my research properly when I entered my bid. This is partly why I am wondering if the missing ears are a good enough reason to return it.

That's your decision really - but you don't have a case on functional grounds, and the very good and clear pictures on the listing very obviously show that the rabbit ears are not present. IMO, if I was a seller who had taken the time to take decent photos and it was my buyer that wanted to return it due to nothing other than his/her lack of research, I'd be very disappointed. Just my two pence.

Again, don't mean to be blunt or rude on it but this is always the issue with places like fleabay.

Yes perhaps you are right. I will hang on to it and see if I can get hold of the ears for completeness.

I will also try to remember to avoid eBay late at night after a drink or two!

Seems to be a very regular occurance in a recent thread on purchases on eBay! :bonk:

Anyway, you've got a fantastic piece of old school Nikon fast glass coming your way, so let's just enjoy it! I thoroughly enjoy using my 105mm f/2.5, it's an awesome bit of kit.
